What oil/grease to use?

I went on a bit of a roadtrip today looking for Silicon grease lubricant for my 1911, but all I could find was Silicon spray.

I checked B&Q, Woodies, and Halfords (two separate shops) and no luck. Plenty of spray but I'm looking for a grease.

Anyone know where I would pick some up?

Well, you'll want a silicone spray/grease, though for inside gearboxes, lithium grease is quite a good idea. Best places to source the greases, are shooting shops/hunting shops, and places that do car parts. Both are used in car stuff.

If you're a regular gearbox mechanic this won't interest you but I picked up a nice pack of oils/grease in MIA. It's by Element and there are three lubricants (2 oils, 1 grease) for various parts of an AEG, for someone who only occasionally opens a gearbox it's a nice little pack and only cost a few quid.

Firekitten, I've seen many techs recommend white lithium grease so it must have some advantages over other products but I have also read that it can destroy rubber/plastic and should only ever be used on metal-to-metal interfaces. Can you confirm?

You're quite right Decoy. Lithium Grease, is to be only used inside the gearbox, for greasting gears and the inside of the shell when building/ rebuilding a gearbox. Things like the tappet plate may contact it, but shouldnt be an issue.

Use silicone grease for the piston, and around the piston head/inside that area of the gearbox...

Simple way to think of it, is 'mechanics' (Things that go whirrr) = Lithium grease.
Air system of the aeg (Cylinder, piston, nozzle hop, barrel) = Silicone.

    And this....

First one for GBB's / AEG externals.
    Second for inside your gearbox.

    Simples..... :)

Check the silicone one you linked is 100% silicone, the 3 in one products tend to have adatives that suck for gbb and aeg rubber.

The 3 In 1 silicone has no adatives afaik. Have been using it for years without a problem :)
