Why do you work?

What gets you up in the morning? Fear?, Love of what you do?, necessity?,the mortgage? Is it what you hoped to do? What would you do if you could change career now, knowing what you now know? Would you change anything?

For me, I have no idea what I do for a living, literally. My job description seems to change daily, which I like, and I work to see what will happen. I've had crap jobs aplenty just to pay the bills, but not for a fair while now, thank God, so whats your gig, and why?

Worst work experiences over 20 years of working:

    when I was younger...
helping a man get into a bath and placing his fake leg nearby so he could get out

removing a man from a restaurant for w**king

serving a woman dinner on a tray to her room and she dropped her towel to take the tray

12 hour shifts on an assembly line - brain freeze

    modern day...

Good salary but feeling anxious and depressed on pay day. Giving 50% of earnings back to the state. No holidays in years.Feeling robbed. Hating the responsibility. Wishing I was a student again. Nothing to aspire to anymore. What now? Missing going out on 20 quid, getting hammered with friends on the beach. Middle age no fun :( Being a student again and sleeping in would be like winning the lottery.Simplicity of books and essays. Aaaaaw bliss.

I work over 50 hours a week in two jobs and a have maybe a slightly above average salary, but only because I work so friggin much. I'm tired of being tired all the time. Tired of paying so much tax, tired of working so much to save for stupid ****e that I don't really need.

If only this country had nice weather, it would make work so much less a chore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,244 ✭✭✭sdanseo

I don't work, I'm a lazy scumbag and I sit on the dole and basically let everyone else work their arse off to pay their mortgage AND buy me food and clothes.

    Oh no wait, that's scumbags.

I work for moneyz. That's the way of it.

Whats the difference between a power lunch and a normal lunch? Is it like a speed turd?

love my job and use the money i am paid to pay the bills which gives me the opportunity to enjoy my personal life and go on holiday once a year and hang out with family and friends until the paycheck runs out - prob sounds sad to all those 'kewl' students posting

my job is in the public service working with insane (i'm serious) amounts of council tenants every day (i know the most of you will laugh but its true - a lot of us actually do stuff) no 2 days are the same and its a lot of problem solving and challenges,

and i love the fact that despite all the pay cuts, job restrictions, abuse from the private sector, abuse from the public sector, abuse from the media, that no-one has been able to take the enjoyment i get out of my work away from me or ever will until i decide so - i control my happiness, no-one else

Oh no its not. If you just wanted money, there's a lot easier ways of getting it than working, so why do you work?

A power lunch is what you have when you are a master of th universe in a flash suit.
Similarly you don't "nap", you have a power kip.

Not every one gets the full amount on the dole im on the dole have a morgage and a child and i get 4 euro a week from the dole as my girlfriend is working sure it costs me almost that just to get to the post office and if i dont pick it up it would just mess up my stamps etc

So not everyone that is out of work is just siting around geting free money as alot of people think people that go by the book seem to get sweet f**k all

even in the current climate i'm still embarrassed not to have a job or trade tbh.

don't go taking pride in not working. if you must, you'd better be doing something more productive in your own time than the mind-numbing wastefulness that tends to be 'work' for most

    like typing on boards wheee..

Gotta love the dole bludgers and eternal students posting in a thread called "why do you work", probably about time for someone to start a "why don't you work" thread, along the lines of the money threads doing the rounds. Anybody actually work anymore? I kinda thought I was pushing the bus on my own, maybe I'm right.
