I don't like asking the state for help, however in a little bit of bother.

I'm in my final year of study in College and have accepted a job offer which will start at the end of June.

I've worked right through college (part-time), including a full year of work in 3rd year (work placement) so I have paid a fair amount of PRSI.

At the end of March 2011, I left my part-time job to concentrate on my studies, however I am now running short on money.

    I have 2 questions:

First, am I entitled to any of the tax I paid in 2011? as I never actually reached my tax credit limit as I was paying it each month.

Second, I am entitled to claim anything as I have paid PRSI for over 5 years now?

    Thanks for the help

I can answer your question about social welfare benefit. If you are still in full time education you cannot apply for benefit or allowance as you are not available to take up full time employment.

With regard to your tax... this is an amateurs advice... if you dont work for 2011 I think you can claim your tax back at the end of the year, but if you qualify for JSB and get it a certain proprotion of JSB is liable for tax.

    Thanks for that.

I will be working in June 2011(and forward) so I am unsure if I can claim back any due tax... or is it as you said: "having to wait until the end of the year"

Maybe someone else can shed some more light

Unfortunately unless you where receiving the Back to Education Allowance, then as a student you will not be entitled to claim any form of social welfare assistant. This is a very unfair system to students, as I know loads that finish in April and dont start back in their studys untill oct and during the summer months are still unable to claim an SWA payment or a JB/JA even doh they are more than willing to look for and except a Job if they could find one during these summer months. This is because they are not consideted to be subject to the genuiely seeking work conditions. A lot are expected to live on thin air. As for you claiming tax from the revenue, i would not be 100% on whether you could. Best bet would be for you to give them a ring on monday and ask them if you can claim any of your tax back.
