Here's one you AHer's that you might be able to answer. Why the obsession with being the first to comment on a blog, article or thread?

It's the number one "thanks whoring" position.

I like to aim for the third post, takes the pressure to be interesting off.

Ok but could you explain why first reply deserves thanks?

How BluesBerry managed to notice a brand new thread and reply in about 30 seconds from being posted is pretty impressive tho.

people crave attention and naturally seek attention from their peer and i guess the internet is just an extension of that.

not really about being second to post but deffo top 5 -

its all about human psychology, most people wont read past the first page of a thread so by being second, third etc it will have the highest number of viewing thus giving your post a higher possible chance of being 'thanked' multiple times.

It's not that impressive really. It just means that he has nothing better to do.

Unlike the rest of us who are actually all at a big After Hours coke & hookers party. At the minute, I'm banging a porn star doggie style and have my laptop resting on her arse.

    To get thanks.

Pretty much any thread you post will always be used by someone to get an internerd high five from all the other boards wanna be comedians who are probably mute hermits in real life.

Obsession? Some are perhaps and some aren't. I'm glad to belong in the latter category. It's a bit like sex, I don't believe in desperately rushing in.

What obsession? Somebody has to post second - it's not possible for there not be a second post.

The obsession is the analysis of the second post...

I would rather be the last to post in a thread. That would mean no one could top my awesomeness with a rebuttal of their own.

I'm sure that exists, but I'm not convinced it's anywhere near as widespread as assumed.

Hmm. So unless Geekologie or Gizmodo have someone patiently lurking, waiting for the next article just so they can shout 'First!' in the comments section we might run the risk of never seeing a third post?

One starts a thread on After Hours, a forum that is frequented by a lot of people, in order for people to post to it. When it is the first thread on the list, it is noticed - someone has to write the second post (or first reply - whichever you prefer).

if we all ignored your post in order not to be the first to reply then there was no point to the question in the first place.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I thought the OP meant when people actually post "First!". Generally doesn't happen on Boards but on other sites it is very common.

the first to comment, would it not have to be in reply to something ?

Lol! That's what I meant. I probably wasnt very clear.

    Example:
    http://www.geekologie.com/2011/03/laptop_stolen_owner_remotely_a.php#comment

In this case the guy shouting 'First' is actually too slow. :)

It doesn't exactly make sense (which is probably why it's not used on boards) but on a lot of blogs, facebook pages statuses of big pages, and well an endless list of sites when the owner posts something the first comment or reply to it is often "First" or "1st" or "OMMMGG!!!1!! FIRSST".

It gets annoying after a while.
