Has been flying around the past 20 minutes or so.

    Anyone have an idea why?

It's the Rescue helicopter, it's at the Hospital right now

I'm gonna start a thread one of these about a car on a road and ask why it is there, and what does it mean, where it is going, noise pollution and other externalities.

Are you in the Salthill area?

I was talking to my parents and they said the Air Sea Rescue helicopter has flown over their house every evening for over a week now. Usually around the same time.

Seems a bit more than usual.

It was the Coast Guard helicopter call sign Rescue 118 and is based in Sligo, only see that one here every now and then. Not sure what the actual emergency was, but it landed at the hospital with a casualty and then went to the airport to refuel before returning to Sligo.

Last night was Irish Coast Guard Sikorsky S61N "RESCUE 118" based in Sligo Airport, She circled 3 times to confirm the Location of the Helipad as they would not normally be landing at Galway Hospital with them being based in Sligo, the identical S61N we are used to is The Shannon based "RESCUE115".

They rotate the Helicopters from Base to Base every so often (Shannon/waterford/Dublin/Sligo) but before that they are usually sent to Shanon for maintenance and there are 2 spares available to take up the slack should one Helicopter become unserviceable.

Rescue118 is Based in Sligo/Rescue117 is Based in Waterford/Rescue116 is Based in Dublin/Rescue115 is Based in Shannon.

There are 2 Spare Sikorsky S61N's available and 1 is Located in Shannon and the other is Located in Waterford.

The emergency was a person ( climber ) reported missing and exposed to the elements, it was a climber on one of the 12 Bens Mountains and was successfully found and winched on board Rescue118 and she then deployed to Galway Hospital with the person.

All in all another successful job done. :)

It was not flying around for 20 minutes, it was on the ground for 20minutes.
