Was driving to work this morning and saw my first Nissan Juke.
Holy crap, why would anyone buy this car?

2011 cars seem to be all bubbles and silly lines.

Someone in work was raving about these as a "funky looking yoke" It looks like the creature from Alien gave itself a coat-hanger abortion.

little strong for this hour of a friday...?

I think they look really well in the flesh. At least a mainstream manufacturer is making an effort at something different.

    More here, here and here.

I agree, just went out to the car to get some cash, someone here has a red/wine one, looks very well. They look rotten in the OPs pic.

+1, I've seen two in black, one parked up and the other driving around. They look much, much better than any pics I've seen. I actually like the front of them, the back looks a bit too much like an elevated micra though, but they're not terrible.

Definitely good to see them go for a unique look and not just roll out another blandmobile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,191 ✭✭✭_Conrad_

Hate the look of those awful things. Different? not at all... most modern cars are blob shaped like that, and it's the same basic shape as all the other fake 4x4s, i assume thats what it's meant to be....

the only thing "different" is the stupid looking way the lights are layed out. I still think the new KA is uglier though, it just looks unnaturally shortend like it was "squashed in" from both ends and looks really jacked up on it's silly tiny wheels.

If i was to vote on the ugliest front of any car though it'd be the front of modern peugeots

The Juke is a bit silly looking really IMO - if you want a mini SUV a Kia Soul looks better to me.

The Tiida is an absolute aesthetic failure.
As is the Ssangyong Rodius - they even try to minimise the shots of the horrendous back/side on their own website.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,044 ✭✭✭Wossack

saw one out on the road and actually laughed

same with the maxi mini yoke (countryman?) - what a clown car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,799 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

It looks like someone made a model out of cheap plastic and then left it out in the sun to melt a little bit.

Ha... read the thread title and thought - it's gotta be the Nissan Juke. And voila! Horrible creature.

Gets my vote as the ugliest thing on sale.

The Juke is trying too hard, the styling is very busy, but it's actually not badly proportioned, and so it looks better in the metal.

The Mini Countryman the opposite of the Juke: in photos it looks like a Mini (good), but in the metal it looks bloated and deformed. The longer you look at it, the worse it looks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,015 ✭✭✭✭Mc Love

They look out of this world in a bad way of course. Its something like they are too short, and from whatever angle it just looks so bad

The ugliest car ever - hate that the lights are so small and high up - looks better on the advert than in real life! (love the advert!!!)

I always thought the Fiat Multipla was the most poxy car I ever seen, still do.

Not still on sale in that odd form tho

Any of those small hatchbacks-turned-into-convertibles are usually awful

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭pippip

Have to say I'm divided on this one, at first I thought it was horrid but now I don't find it too bad, in a way I admire how different it is from everything else. Have been finding new cars very bland lately.

Also cannot believe the amount of them around, they must be selling well.

I think if they got rid of those two big eyes in the front it would be less ugly.

i like the juke... it is interesting.....
    something different...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,812 ✭✭✭mailforkev

The new Hyundai ix35 is a woeful looking thing, looks like it's melting.

Conversely, I think its sister car the Kia Sportage is one of the best looking mainstream cars on sale at the moment.

Others badly hit by the ugly stick IMO include the BMW X1 and latest model Mazda 3.

I quite like the Juke, at least it's a bit different.

it would just look like a squashed murano then, still horrible.

nissan and put some really horrible looking cars on the market recently, the juke/joke, micra, tiida, note and murano are the worst offenders

I have to vote for the Nissan Tiida. Saw another one a few days ago and was reminded of how horrifically ugly it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,209 ✭✭✭maximoose

Saw the thread title and just knew it was going to be about the Juke. Horrific, atrocious looking car. I think I've seen 3 about, if you're going to spend the money on an '11 car why the f*ck would you get something as ugly as that?!

The Tiida saloon is horrible alright, the hatchback version is so much nicer.

The Multipla may have been ugly but it was a very practical machine, certainly not crap.

The Juke is doing exactly what its design brief wanted; get people talking about it, you either love it or hate it, but its a niche car so Nissan don't have to play it safe. Personally I don't like it but I do understand it, and its got a terrific interior.

People will talk about anything. While i'm talking to people, if the juke comes up in conversation i'll do my best to convince them not to buy any of the butt ugly marketing gimmicks, which is all they are, as that will benefit me greatly due to not having to see them everywhere.

And people who buy a nissan leaf, well i'll laugh at them, right in their face, they've all been conned into buying a useless (and entirely impractical in this country as there isn't the charging infrastructure for them) joke of a car, designed to rake in money and publicity for nissan, and increas the smugness factor of the eejits buying them. Their range is pathetic and the charging time is far too slow to be practical for most people. Also, most of the power to charge them comes from fossil fuels being burned.
Electric cars would be, and will be fine when done properly, but the leaf is like an unfinished concept car, not quite good enough for production and not ready but they pushed it out anyway.

You can rant all you like, enough people like the Juke (as this thread proves - a small minority do like it) to make it work. Its not supposed to be a mass market car.

The Leaf is a different issue, because as you say, its not really fit for purpose, (I'm not really convinced electric cars will ever be the answer, my money's still on hydrogen fuel cells in the long run), and I do think the odd idiot could buy one thinking its a proper-car rather than an expensive toy.

Yeah the new Sportage is quite nice looking, especially in black. It cannot take a photo to save its life though, looks much better in the metal. The LEDs fit the styling very well too.

if that came in white, much like the kia soul and nissan cube, it would look like some kind of giant fridge/microwave/other kitchen appliance with wheels.

I'd pick the Materia over the Puke

I only know one person who has ordered one and thats in Germany. As you say its not the car for everyone but he is getting one. I would not regard him as smug or an eejit, he is buying it because of his interest in cars and technology in general. He has solar at home and reckons he can easily use it for commuting and a general run around, for longer distances he will use one of his other cars. Charging infrastructure in Germany is not much better than here.

The technology is in the early stages, but there again some people are opposed to anything new or different, be it advances in aerodynamics, catalysors, diesel engines or whatever. He has been laughed at for buying it but as he points out its his choice, and nobody is being forced to buy it.

(For the record his other cars are a '93 M5 Touring and a 280SL Pagoda.)

    So true,

I'd rather have my Golf mk4 than some new cars (Based on looks). I love the plain box shape - none of these crazy curves and lines.

I would say that being my first car but some older cars look better then new models.

no offence but imo new Toyotas look horrible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

The Puke (I love that name btw) is terrible. Viewed from the side, it has the most ridiculous Kuga-esque wheel arches - even if you stuck 18's under there, they'd still look like shopping trolley castors. Again from the side, the side windows and roof are clearly copied from the MINI. The big spot lights on the front are from an Impreza, and the top squinty frog lights are off a Micra.

It's like they couldn't decide what they wanted, and made a mash up of everyone else's ideas. Having said that, this *is* Nissan. They're the company bringing us the convertible Murano. Go bland attempts at being interesting!
