    Hi guys,
My brother in law got a little netbook today - he is trying to connect it to the internet via wireless.

So, they dont actually have a router, they share with the neighbours (they have the key-all above board).

The thing is it keeps saying it is searching for the network. When I look at the ipconfig, it is not acquiring an IP address/mask.

    Can anyone help?

It's not going to get an IP address until it authenticates with the Wireless access point/router in your neightbours

What operating system is on the netbook?
Does it have a network connection manager where you can see what wireless networks are listed to enter the key?

    Thanks for reply.
    They've entered the key.
It says its connected, and it trying to acquire the network. But it cant and fails.
Sorry - not sure what OS it is running.
I think they might be entering the key incorrectly but not sure how to edit/change it.

Yes I would think the key is entered wrong if it's trying to assign an IP
Depending on the OS there should be an option to tell the OS to forget the wireless connect so it drops the setting.
Next time type the key in notepad or some kind of text editor to make sure it looks right and if possible paste it into the config screen for the wireless network

    Solution:
    1. You need to change the ACCES LIST (MAC ADRESS FILTER )

Once you know your router's IP address, type it into your internet browser's address field.
    - the username will often be blank or "admin" or "administrator". As I said, check the docs that came with the router or check the manufacturer's website. Gud luck!

    2. It might be a DHCP problem. Change tcp/ip settings (acquiring an tcp/ip automatically)

And there we were a few years ago being told that everything was going to be 'plug and play' from now on! ;)
