The wife told me earlier that her handbrake needed to be pulled nearly 90 degrees to get tight, I had a look under the car this evening and noticed the cable going to the driver side brake assembly had come out of its holder, i tried to pull it back with a pliers with the handbrake in the down position but it wasnt moving, is there a special tool or knack to getting this back in ?

    206cc by the way.

Pull up the couling around the lever and there is a 10mm nut loosen it off but don't don't take the nut completely off.

I had the cover off earlier, couldent find and adjustment, tbh i didnt look too hard, will have a go at that tomorrow evening when she gets home.

I doubt i will get the ~40mm i need though from that.

As i said in the OP, when i was trying to pull the cable back it wasnt moving !

Hi, how are the brake discs and brake pads thickness (or brake shoes/drum)? Maybe they are worn? Have you checked that?

I posted a pic that shows the cable is physically out of its holder...

All 4 corners had disks and pads changed in November.

The disc in the picture in post#1 looks seriously scored/worn

Will that affect the operation of the handbrake?

yep thats not a disc that was fitted in november. Maybe it just had pads in november. Im not saying that has anything to do with the problem.

    That handbrake cable has snapped!
You'll have to disconnect it from the caliper and then undo the connection at the opposte end and replace it completely.

It was taken with a phone, looks worse than it is, just the usual surface marks, nothing can be felt with a rub of the finger.

can you see in the pic where the ball is already off the catch on the caliper already...what would make you think it snapped ?
