Registering pedigree cattle

Some really obvious questions: in a dairy herd, how do you decide which calves to register as pedigree - everything with ancestry or just the best?

How many generations does her history have to be before she'll qualify as pedigree?

What are the benefits of individual pedigree registration, if it's only going to be part of the herd?

It hasn't been done on our place for a few years, and theoretically there are about 80 calves & calved heifers that might qualify as pedigree, but at €13 a throw, that's a fair amount of cash.

the one real downside i see with ihfa is that when you register a calf online it automatically goes throughto ihfa, so if the calf dies at a week old there is no relationship between ihfa and icbf to see this and you get charged the €13 for registering the calf that is dead.
