Say you are a lapsed Catholic, cultural Catholic, born Catholic but not really one any more or any of the other myriad versions of Irish (Non) Catholicism. If you tick 'catholic' on the census form are you giving passive support to a morally reprehensible institution which systematically covered up abuse and puts its own well being above that of all others?

By tick Catholic in the census are you passively supporting a corrupt institution? 24 votes

if over ten thousand people write there religion as one thing it becomes an official religion of the country. it happened in new zealand a while back where a load of people declared themselves to be 'jedi'. we should do that here.

No. It's a census you're completing, not a donation form.

Bob dole likes your idea! I would write boards.ie as well a religion, but shall refrain in the eventuality of looking like a tool on census day.

You're propping up institutions like Catholic Schools when you've no reason to avail of them.

Is it time for a Catholic/ Religion discussion superthread?

I'd love to argue about secularism and leave the "does God exist?" question out of it.

Personally, I'm more concerned about the separation of Church and State than arguing the finer points of how the universe began.

    Exactly.

Didn't everybody get this and all the other teenage discursive greatest hits off their chests at school and college debating?

I don't see how.. The question exists in the census to gauge the number of people who identify themselves as catholic etc. Simple as.. it doesn't ask whether or not they support any organisation.

By partaking in the census are you passively supporting the torture of people in war torn regions?

What difference does it make if people identify themselves as Catholic or not?

    Would it have some effect?

And so to gauge the power and relevance of the Roman Catholic Church in this country. Youve heard of them. They run the majority of our schools in tandem with protecting child abusers. Nice bunch of chaps:)

Telling people what religion they can't identify with is just as bad as telling them which one they must.

A humanist on the phone to George Hook hit the nail on the head this evening. Religion is a cultural and traditional thing in Ireland. Roman Catholicism is so ingrained in the fabric of society here that its as intrinsically Irish as Guinness, Shamrocks and Michael Flatley. People don't think about it enough to actually make a conscious decision to tick the correct box on the census i.e. If you really don't believe and this had led you to not practicing the faith you were born into, then you shouldnt be ticking Roman Catholic. Of course a combination of this cultural view of religion and scary relatives who will disown you if you declare atheism, leads to a huge proportion of "Catholics" in Ireland.

Its only boards so I have no illusion that it will have any effect. I do it out of curiosity...... morbid fascenation:)

You're asking a question about tacit support and yet seem reluctant to answer a similar question. I can only assume that it's because you realise that by answering, you're own argument will be weakened?

If somebody marks themselves as catholic, it does not tacitly imply that they support anything to do with the hierarchical structure of the church. It simply means that they consider themselves to be catholic.

Heres what i dont get. The Irish Catholic Church has abused its status, its people and generations of Irish Women and children. Cases are still coming to light and have been covered up by the church from The Vatican down. This is also happening internationally.
Also internationally the RCC stance on contraception is causing death and misery in undeveloped countries.
The census is used to gauge how the Govt legistlates and so is a main source from which the RCC attains its influence in Ireland.
I dont get how any one could tick that box with a clear conscience but I especially dont get how thousands of vague wishy washy folk will tick the box out of some sort of cultural habit. I know they are free to but personally i think it is an irresponsible thing to do.

No it doesn't become an official religion, and no it didn't happen in New Zealand.

X thousand people did put Jedi down as their religion, I believe initially starting in NZ. But the most that has happened is that the census database has an entry in it to allow them to add up the number of people putting Jedi on the form in the UK.

That does not make it an offical religion.

Although I think it was something like the 4th most popular entry in the religion question in the last UK census, ignoring the "No religion" answers which was the second most popular answer.
