    http://www.extratime.ie/newsdesk/articles/5223/sense-belonging/

    Claire Tullys Article on Extratime.ie
If there’s one type of football fan I just don’t understand it’s the one who declares his undying love for the game in one breath and tells you he ‘wouldn’t support that league’ in the next. It’s sort of like saying you enjoy eating your favourite food - but only on a Tuesday. It doesn’t make sense to me.

I’m not a football snob and never have been. In the right company (and a warm enough jacket) I’d sit and watch pretty much any game. I follow a team in the League of Ireland in the same way I follow a team in the Premier League and the SPL. Just because they are ‘foreign’ teams doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy watching a game. Christ, if we’re going to get all OCD about supporting ‘foreign’ anything, your local football team is about as solid an argument as a piece of Swiss cheese. Local heroes are in very short supply and I think you’ll find that globally.

Of course not every football fan is going to see things the same way. More often than not, if you are a League of Ireland fan, you will have at least once experienced the sniggering that so often accompanies a comment from a fellow ‘Irish’ football fan who thinks our domestic league is something of a joke. ‘Sure they’re not even real players!’ is a comment I’ve heard more times than I care to remember. So what are they then, imaginary?

Only last week my brother mentioned he heard two radio DJ’s on air joking that supporting the League here was the equivalent of turning down a 5 star holiday in Dubai for a caravan in Wexford in the pissing rain. No hard feelings to Wexford - I spent plenty of summers there myself, I am a Dub – but you get the point. We’re all partial to a bit of banter but it isn’t really helpful for the national media to take to slagging what is in many ways a struggling league. Talk about a self-depreciation fail.

But for all the fans that ‘identify’ solely with foreign teams they are matched, by strength of opinion if not in number, by League of Ireland fans who will only support their local team. For them the level of football is irrelevant, it’s all about that sense of belonging and what your club means to you, your life and your community.

I love my Friday nights in Tallaght. I pick the same place to park in the Square, I meet the same people, we sit in the same spot in the stadium and there is always the familiar smell of vinegar and chips and fried onions. We know the other fans even if we haven’t met them before because we are Rovers. And when you look around the grounds the flags will come from near and far – not just the ‘local’ area – because you can’t put a perimeter on being a fan.

Likewise I love the trips I’ve made to football abroad, to the Stadium of Light or to White Hart Lane. I love the excitement of match day in the UK and being part of the never ending stream of fans all pouring forth to one place for one reason only – to see ‘their’ team play. Football in the UK is a supersized version of what we have at home – but that doesn’t make it better, just different. The match day experience is a phenomenon we have yet to do justice in our own land.

I’m not going to dictate to anyone what league or what team they should or shouldn’t support, last time I checked I was a Tully not a Gaddafi. But if you’re not willing to appreciate the standard of football outside your own domestic league for what it is then next time the World Cup is on (and if Ireland are out of it) be sure to switch stations. And likewise if you’re that much a snob to turn your nose up at anything other than the crème de la crème of British football, keep your fingers crossed your kids football coach has a better attitude than you.

10 points from 12 will be ok. Derry strengths are in attack and weaknesses in defence, so hopefully Rovers don't sit in with Turner/Rice/O'Donnell and look for a 0-0. Because they won't get one if that's the case.

    Was expecting you to beat us up there (as per usual) but after seeing that line-up I really think we'll win. I think it might be scrappy though. Our line up will be something like;

    ..................Cherrie
    Madden....Hector...Hawkins...Murphy
    Kearns...Bolger....Ward....Gaynor
    ...........Byrne...Quigley

Hopefully at least one of Fagan and Flood is fit after injury scares during the week. If they are I reckon we'll win.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Mervue seem to have improved a lot. They have some decent players this season like Tom King, Jason Molloy and Rory Gaffney. I'd still be very surprised if Shels didn't win but it won't be as easy as it has been in the past.

She's well known to be both a Rovers and Sunderland fan, the Pats photo obviously for some promotional event, not to mention she looks wrecked in that pic!

Dreamers what about Daly, he injured? Reckon Derry will be our toughest match yet but i'm positive. Galway well worth a punt if Flood and Fagan are out!

I wonder will the shams fans get treated any better in derry than we did - it was a joke for away supporters up there.
    Half hour queing for tickets.
Stuck in the corner behind the greyhound track in the corner(binoculars needed)
10 euro in for 7 year olds.
    Absolutely no segregation.
I await how the shams fans get on.

mad game tonight Dundalk ripped us apart in the 1st half and Mark Wigleys 2 goals were very good (2nd "goal of the season" contender and also "where the **** are our defenders" contender)

When Mc Faul went off injured we brought Crowley who did nothing other than press the Dundalk midfield and they wilted and we came back into the game and could ahve scored 4 or 5 (so could they tbh). If we combined Mc Millan and hector from them we would have the dodgiest centreback in the world.

Also 2 brothers scoring in the sam match Trivia Question for the future.

2 nill to the Bit O'Red. Plus a disallowed goal and a saved penalty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,438 ✭✭✭frantic190

We were poison tonight, definitely missed Christy Fagan linking the play up. TBH Galway didn't look much better than we were, think the bottom 6 teams are around the same level.

Pats and Rovers are 2 out of our 3 next games and both are gonna hammer us.

Dispiriting evening in Belfield. Going to be a long season. :(

Tried hard, and had a lot of the game but a severe lack of cutting edge upfront and in the center of midfield is going to scupper us in the majority of ties.

That things improved for a spell when we brought on our new Spanish defender (was at Drogheda last year) to play out wide / up front says it all really.

    Happy with last night.

If you had offered me 10 points from 12 to arguably the strongest teams in the league this year, with including 4 points from a trip to Sligo and Derry, I would have bitten your hand off. Especially so when being poor for two of the games.

Think it is time to freshen up the starting 11 though.

Good run of late came to a halt down in Limerick last night. Longford loosing 1-0 to the hosts.

Hopefully can get back to winning ways next saturday in arguably the largest derby in not only European football but World football... hell Galactic football.

Id like to apologise to all Rovers fans for an earlier thread insinuating that they were the biggest bunch of hoof ball merchants in the league. Pats took it to a WHOLE new level last night!
It actually felt like being in the first division again. Dundalk dominated for the first 50 minutes and then lowered ourselves to Pats horrible horrible brand of football and got what we deserved. We hardly won a header in attack or defence for the rest of the game.
Probably one of the worst games of football I have ever seen and a million miles away from the standard of football in the 0-0 draw with Bohs even though there was five goals scored. I think the next time Dundalk are playing pats I might go and watch a game of chess or synchronised swimming instead because it would be a whole lot more interesting.

And right you were, not sure if it was just we played crap or Mervue played decent but either way they look better than they have done in previous seasons.

Do Mervue reguarly announce waffle attendences? Not a chance there was 624 last night, maybe 300-350 with about 150 Reds.
