    I am looking to buy a Volvo S40 and one thing im worried about is the timing belt.
    Is there a way i can tell if it has been done or not?

    S40.. nice motor, especially if you get the winter pack...

    Timing chain, most mechanics use tipex to write on the outside of the casing to indicate what mileage it was done at.. obviously this can be done by any unscrupulous seller if they so wished.

    Best way to confirm if youa re woried is to see an official invoice or to call and confirm the garage where it was supposedly done and have them confirm for you...

    looking in to the engine bay it is hard to tell if it has been done...

    And if you can't prove it has been done assume that it hasn't.

    What year and engine size is the S40 you are looking at buying as depending on the year and model it may have a timing chain or belt?
