Wiggle Pricing

I've always found Wiggle discounting a bit dishonest as they are based on list prices however I'm a bit pissed off about this one:

Was buying a helmet through them this morning and the price stated €157 including free shipping (I was logged in and price was based on ireland delivery, euros etc). When I clicked to buy, I went through entering my cc details and clicked standard delivery rather than priority shipping and noticed that the price was now €195!!

Has anyone ever experienced this with them?? I've bought a lot of stuff from them before and this never happened:mad:

Wiggle are charging irish vat. Helmets are 0% vat in the uk but they are 21% vat here, hence the huge price difference.

Thanks Penexpers. Vat should be charged at the rate of the country selling the goods (within the EU) so Irish Vat shouldn't come into it. If I buy clothing or any other products online form the UK they have the UK Vat (17%) applied and not the Irish rate.

Likewise If I export something from Ireland, the Irish vat rate should be applied to the price, not the vat rate of the destination:confused:

and wiggles is more honest than CRC who discount one size and thats the price you see on the search then you go to buy and your size is at a completely different price

    reaaly f**ks me off

although i did get my shoes cheap when they discounted the whole lot for 3 days before realizing what they'd done:D

    NO.
CRC and Wiggle and Amazon etc etc sell such a significant amount of goods to Ireland that they are obliged to apply the Irish VAT rate. They don't do it by choice, there is some EU thing covering this I think. If you went to a smaller trader they would be under whatever the threshold is, and could quite legitimately sell you the Helmet with 0% VAT.

    I stand corrected. It's still a pisser though:mad:

While I'm here any recommendations on this:http://www.wiggle.co.uk/met-parachute-mtb-full-face-helmet/

I've had a few scary moments when flying around the faster sections of ticknock/ballinastoe and I'm quite fond of my teeth:)

Buy from another UK retailer who is not registered for VAT in Ireland, such as Slane Cycles

Wiggle and CRC are applying the correct treatment - stick in your options that your location is Ireland and the correct (Irish VAT inclusive) price will come up

Aside from the expense of installation, fake teeth are much better I've found -they are stronger, and keep their colour a lot longer than 'normal' teeth, and they're lighter :)

Freeborn.co.uk were a company I was onto before for a light fullface, very helpful and small enough to not apply the extra 21%.

The MET parachute is probably as much as you can put in front of your face without it being too hot for XC use on a summers day. Can't say much more than that as I've never used one. I'd be a bit sceptical about how much protection it would offer tho.

I have a Catlike Gravity which is well vented and more like a normal bike helmet with a chin guard than a remodelled motocross helmet - but it's still very very warm. Fine for night time XC rides in the winter (the light is nice and stable on it too) but would kill you on a lukewarm day. There's extra padding you could remove around the face/chin I suppose

The Specialized Deviant is another lightish well vented full face if thats what you want. Looks well and it's a reasonable price if you don't go for the carbon version

The threshold for registration here is actually very low- sales of €35,000. I imagine there are a lot of UK sellers that should be registered but are not.

I got my bike off Freeborn - saved a lot of money. It was a specialized bike and the link arm snapped on it - they were very helpful and got specialized to send the replacement part to me separately before I sent the broken piece back.
    Definitely recommended.

Only if you fit carbon fibre teeth. Alu and steel teeth can be quite heavy...

Of course there is the chewing power cables issue...

Ceramic + titanium would be DAYcent I'd say (what do the use for implant teeth anyway?)

Titanium for the implant - no VAT on them, wherever they are sourced from;)

    Hydroxyapatite.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,857 ✭✭✭langdang

Ya, as I was typing I realised that ceramic and titanium would be actually probably the best engineering solution. I had been thinking along the lines of ceramic knife razor sharp gnashers - I suppose you could put razor sharp ceramic tips on a carbon fibre frame (for weight saving as previously mentioned.. ;) )

    That's just defeatist!

For the record, mine are ceramic, with a little bit of carbon used as posts to hold em in place... it's got to shave a few micrograms off my weight :)

For the record about a year and a half ago MBUK listed the PArachute helmet as one of the worst products available - basically condemning the strength of the face shield

I know this has been discussed on the Epic site also and the general feeling was that they were junk! If you need a full face helmet (ie for downhill racing!) get one!

I reckon OP wants one for all mountain / aggressive XC use - no way you'd use one of the Parachutes for DH.
But full on DH helmet would boil ya on all mountain stuff I'd say.

Giro did a helmet called the Switchblade, and Casco (a company I hadn't really come across) did the Viper. The parachute seems to be the only chin-guard helmet (but not full on full face) that is still available. As previously stated, I'm dubious of how much protection the chin guard of the parachute actually gives.

If there is any decent helmet for all mountain stuff that won't boil yer brain I'd be interested!

I don't want a helmet for pure downhill and I dont expect the parachute to offer any where near the same level of protection that a proper full face would give. I've been going fairly fast down some of the steeper trails and just don't fancy a full on face plant which I think is going to happen to me sooner or later. I also don't want to look like a nob and a proper full face would be overkill and uncomfortable for long climbs on above trails.

I just seen this and I'm happy enough to go with the parachute

Looks a bit staged but the helmet did a better job than a standard trail lid would have done.
