I've to construct a 50/60m driveway to the site. What I want to know is how much do I need to dig out before laying stone? There is about 4 to 12 inches of topsoil on top of clay. Is it enough to dig out the top soil and lay down the stone on the clay beneath?

Yes, you're about right there! For the initial stages of your build you will have heavy lorrys delivering to your site, so a 6" layer of broken stone will suffice. You could put a dust layer on top of this after a few weeks traffic to smooth it out.

Yeah just strip back the topsoil and put down your stone. Something like a 4" down or 6" down would be perfect for your road layer then. Oh and running a roller on the stone will help bed it down nicely for traffic.
