Looking for tips for gradual sustainable weight loss/maintenance

    Hi there

I wonder if any of you out there have a few tips to offer.

My story is that I'm a middle aged (scarey to admit) woman who would like to drop about 10-14 lbs very slowly and then maintain my weight. I'm not really looking for a weight loss diet or weightwatchers (the weight just goes on again for me) but a few small adjustments that would help keep the weght down as I get even older:eek:

So I'm 5ft 5ins and while I was in my mid20s to mid30s I was between 135-145 lbs and then over the last 15 years I've put up another 8-10 lbs - and now am about 152 lbs - I think I should be c. 140lbs.

Breakfast is usually cereal/porridge. Lunch is soup with a slice of bread or sandwich or salads. Dinner is usually stew or similar with medium portion of pots/rice and v often 2/3 glasses of wine and a light dessert (low cal mousse or similar). So I'm eating modestly enough. If I had eaten like this when I was younger I'd have been slim! I do use butter, olive oil, full milk but in v small quantities. I try to avoid bread and cheese (love both). I don't want to make massive changes as I want this to be sustainable. I do eat out 4 or 5 times a month and travel sometimes for work when I find it hard to keep to a diet. I can see the wine would be an immediate gain but have found it v hard to stop - but I don't take any other alcohol - just the wine with dinner 4-5 days a week.

I walk 30-40 mins 3-4 times a week, do a yoga class, golf (long course v hilly) once a week and occasionally do longer hikes.

So I think my diet is reasonable on a day to day basis but with the occasional breakout and I can't sustainably up my exercise rate - not enough time in the day but just feel that ageing and slowing metabolism is making it really hard to lose weight and avoid incremental increases.

Perhaps someone out there would have a few ideas of things I could incorporate into a daily routine in the long term that would help keep the weight off.

    Sorry for the rambling post.

I hate to say it ...and I think you already know it...but that wine isn't helping you at all. You say 2/3 glasses - depending on the size of those glasses that could be half to two-thirds a bottle of wine, doing that 4/5 nights a week means you're consuming 2-3 bottles of wine a week. It's all empty calories. I bet if you knocked it on the head you'd drop pounds pretty quickly. I wouldn't even bother trying to 'cut down' as that only lasts a small time and then you start making excuses to 'up' the quantity again. Save it for a special occasion.;)
