Converting a 2005 Fiat Scudo van to car for private use.

    My brother is considering this option instead of getting a car. Anyone do this before? What's involved? Where is the best place to go about it getting it done, ie seats in back, trim etc.?

    I presume there should be heaps of Scudo taxies about that have had similar converts.

    They wershould be handy enough to get as cars. As are the Peugoet (Expert) and Citroen (dispatch) versions.

    I'd imagine theres plenty around. The UK seemed to like these type of van like cars. The Kangoo kar sold a fair few there too.

    Conveeting would be an unessecary nightmare.

    Thought they were going to bring in legislation that only carvans/jeeps that are built as vans by the manufacturer or existing carvans could be taxed commercial. Anyone know if they brought this in?

    Make sure he does his sums wrt VRT - there will be a VRT liability when converting a commercial vehicle to passenger.

    To do it properly would probably cost 3-4k as you will need new seats, windows, anchor points and seat belts, then you will likely not be able to get insurance for it easily as a private user. Won't be worth doing, much better to sell and get the car equivalent. Also VRT issues which could add another €1500 or so.

    If anyone knows how to do it, and the cost involved, it would be Parfit (http://www.parfit.ie/).

    They do pratically all the taxi conversions - you'll have seen their sticker on the back of the taxi.

    Cheers for all advice, he will be doing it all through the books, IE paying VRT and the correct private road tax etc. The reason he wants to keep van is that he has had it going on four years and it's the Devil he knows, he also likes the option of the double loading side doors.

    Just realised I picked up the OP wrong, but does anyone know if they did bring in that legislation stopping people from converting private vehicles to commercial?

    As far as I'm aware there is no legislation stopping it being done, there are just many hoops to jump through.

    It's now under the remit of the NSAI rather than Revenue, and the people doing the conversion need to approved by the NSAI, then the conversion needs to be approved by the NSAI before registration.

    No-one seems to know the costs involved in the approval process, so for the moment no-one is bringing in new vehicles as passenger and converting in Ireland. I presume it's the same for used vehicles, but not sure as I only deal with the new vehicles.
