My wife and I are thinking about spending a week in Alghero, Sardinia in October, flying from Dublin with Ryanair. Has anyone been there and how was it? Thanks.

Spent 10 days in Sardinia two years ago. In my opinion we made the mistake of spending 2 full days in Alghero before driving east along the north coast.

Do yourself a huge favour and rent a car and drive around and base yourself outside of Alghero. Sardinia is small enough and Alghero is absolutley nothing special, touristy, expensive. The rest of the island is so much more interesting.

I think a week would be a bit long in alghero, i was there for a long weekend and found it lovely but a little quiet (that suited me but might not be everyone's cup of tea). hire a car and have a wander around the island, you could do day trips from alghero but you'd probably be better to spend a couple of nights in alghero and then a couple somewhere else.

Ive been to Sardinia a good few times and never based ourselves in Alghero.

Take ViDuchies advice, hire a car - it's a beautiful Island - great roads, very easy to get around.

We're heading again this year in May - staying in Porto Rodondo on the North East Coast, beside Porto Cervo which is supposed to be the hotspot of the Island.
Previously we've stayed in San Teodoro (south of Olbia) and inland in Abbasanta. Also hired a camper van and stayed at different points around the Island.

Altogether our trip in May is costing less than €350 each - the accomodation is self catering booked on booking.com is costing €300, flights and car hire with Ryanair and Hertz is costing €390 - including Ryanair fees and one checked bag.

Eating out for the most part is cheap and cheerful, the more remote you go, the cheaper it gets. Last year we found a fab restaurant in a rural town that was so good we went back almost every night. There was no english translation on the menu so we went with their recommendations most nights and with 3 courses and wine and coffee our bill was usually under €20 - for both of us!!

Thanks for the advise. You have given me some interesting ideas for our trip to Sardinia and food for thought.

agree with the posts above. From experience I can recommend Baia Santa Reparta and Santa Teresa Gallura area in north/north east part of the island. also a trip to La Madellena [ferry from Palau] is an must if you want some deserted beaches with crystal clear blue water - well worth it.

Porto Cervo is worth a look if you can stomach seeing how the other half lives - designer shops, big boats, fancy cars etc.
