Sun Damage

    I went to a dermatologist this morning for a skin consultation. My skin was examined under ultra voilet light.
    I was pretty surprised when I was told that I had a lot of sun damage on my face. I religiously use spf of at least 30 on my face every day all year
    round. I also have never used a sun bed in my life and hate sunbathing.
    I am just curious to know if anyone else has a similar problem. It's kind of frustrating and ironic since I am very anti sun. :mad:
    I have been booked in for a few treatments to erase the pigmentation.
    On the plus side she said that I have good collagen or whatever so I don't have any fine lines etc.
    I am 27 however in my younger years especially my childhood I was always outside in the sun all day long during the Summers. Would that have something to do with the damage?

    Yes, unfortunately that is the case... getting sunburned ONCE can cause huge damage... dont worry though- be sure to use your factor 30+ even in winter and also this is the bit I never knew....
    You need UVA AND UVB Protection. UVA Rays are the really bad ones... they go deeper into the skin, they can pass through glass and they cause the degradation of your collagen,it also can cause pigmentation were the melanocytes in your skin pick up colour from the sun sporadically, unevenly and therefore cause pigmentation/sun damage. The UVB causes the skin burning...very important to protect against it but it's not nearly as damaging as the UVA. The best thing to do is check to see if the Sunblock youre using blocks against both. If not... go for a Boots Soltan face one...as they have both UVA/UVB. And pls let me know how the treatment goes... I would love to get it done myself:)

    Bridget84, just wondering did you have to get a referral letter from a doctor to make the appointment with the dermatologist?

    Also what sort of treatments have you booked?

    @jenzersboi

    I remember getting badly sunburnt as a child at one stage. Wow, I was unaware that it only took one incidence of sunburn to cause great damage. That's scary.
    I'll let you know how my treatment goes. It's a course of 3. My first one is tomorrow. It wasn't cheap but she assured me I won't be disappointed so I am expecting great results.

    @Swirls

    No I didn't need a referral letter.
    The name of the clinic is Advanced Laser Light.
    They have clinics in all the main cities in Ireland.
    You can go to their website and book a free consultation.
