Looking to get a second hand 600 in range of €1500 - €2400 tops.

    Any recommendations?
Looking at a bandit most likely but wouldn't mind another option. Cross city commute mostly.

Was considering a Kawasaki ZZR but a mechanic told me the have a poor gear box which is a pity cos I liked it otherwise.

You'd pic up a nice Fazer for that money:D

Are you getting it restricted mate.....TBH, I am getting a 600 myself in the next few weeks and my balls ache the amount of HOMEWORK I have done on the different 600's.

Bandits are a very good bike, very common so therfore should be cheaper. Hornets again very similar to the Bandit but lighter so a tad nippier and finished better but a little more exspensive.

Sv650's are a great bike, V twin engine and a little heavier on juice but sound awesome, can be a tad arkward if you a tall bloke.

Fazer 600 is prolly the best of the lot for all round bike....IT REALLY DOES COME DOWN TO THE RIDER, AND WHAT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE ON.

For me, its a Fazer +1

For 2,400 De Niros you would get a very clean 2002/03 Fazer

Suzuki Bandit 600, Honda cbf 600, Honda Hornet 600, Yamaha Fazer 600.

Look them up and take your pick all great bikes.

Of course you would....thats why its all down to the FEEL of the bike for each person, personally for me I would put it above all others.

Also dont forget the CBF500....as someone once said

"2 million couriers cant be wrong"

    ;)

Looks tidy alright but clean curvy SVs can be got for a grand less than that.

What style of bike are you looking for?
If the ZZR was you're favourite then the CBR600 and Thundercat are the most similar...

    Very nice kamikazi.
I'd be planning to haggle down a good bit closer to 2k.

Nor too mad on a CBR, looks deadly and all but looking for something more commuter friendly and will he starting and stopping a fair bit for lights.

Not a huge amount on the web for sale. Ill be looking for a clean enough one, blue, black or maybe silver at a push.
I'll be able to have a proper look.tonight when I have the laptop at home.

I was looking at some of these bikes below.

600cc CBF's seem to in short supply and not too mad on the SV anymore as the power looks low and it looks a little heavy, not too sure though as never drove one or any of these bikes I'm looking at.

    Fazer 2002 15k Miles, €2750.

    Fazer 2000 ? Miles, €1,100.

    Fazer 2004 44k Miles, €2,300.

    Fazer 2002 18k Miles, €2,500.

    Hornet 2002 14k Miles, €2,500.

    Hornet 2002 ? Miles, €2,495.

    Bandit 2005 10k Miles, €3,000.

I'd need to drive a hard bargain to make some of these realistic choices!

Are you on a restricted licence? If so a Vtwin would be best, the low down torque takes the restriction better than the top end powerband in an I4 engine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭Keith186

No I've a full licence. Driving CB1 for years not really any experience on other big bikes though.

    Ah right,

When me and Seany say the SV is down on power we're talking in comparison with Supersports & litre bikes, not 600 naked bikes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭Keith186

    Ah right.
Best thing I can do is go into a bike shop and see these things in the flesh.
Should be able to stop by on way home somewhere.

I'll make sure to give the SV a close look!

Are they good for commuting though? I thought they're only good when in high revs at high speed and would be annoying in city traffic. More maintenance involved on one of these compared to the other bikes mentioned?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,044 ✭✭✭Wossack

you might be confusing this with a cbr600rr, which yes, is a good bit more of a commited sports bike (depending on the year, later ones are considerably more comfortable)

the cbr600f has a great seating position, alot more upright then you'd imagine just looking at the bike parked up, and the engine will do what ya like.. no guttless in low rev type R6 lump in them

Maintenace, I'm not sure about. Same engine I'm sure as whats in the hornets (maybe in a higher state of tune), so wouldnt be too different I'd imagine

Build quality is great in these though also, so would certainly alleviate (or perhaps make cheaper) the running and maintenance costs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭Keith186

Heard if the RR and the F versions but I thought the only difference was engine performance and suspension etc. and still thought both were sports bikes really.

I was on the back of a CBRF before, lethal speed outta them!

    aye good call

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭Keith186

Thundercat sounds like a legend of a bike there's not a whole lot for sale though and parts will be hard to get.

Hard to make up mind! I think I'm edging towards SV 650 as a bit newer and easier to maintain I'd imagine.

Kamikazi give me a shout too if im still not sorted!

You don't have to worry about parts availability for a 'Cat, where did you get that idea?

I've owned both a 'Cat and an SV. In my experience both bikes are easy to maintain and the Yamaha wins for reliability.
The Suzuki is more likely to let you down and the build quality is ****e...

Seen on reviewcentre.com, some irish guy said he struggled to get parts for it, otherwise a savage bike.

Are fairings handy enough to take off on it? I only had naked bikes so far.
Is it reliable starting it in winter? Cats don't like the cold!
Seen a few 98 ones on donedeal and the one on Dublin looks ok.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭defiant12

Fairings can be a bit fiddly but just add 5 - 10 minutes to any job.
Cold starts were never an issue but they do suffer from carb icing.
They are a great all-round bike and give very little trouble.
Like a lot of bikes the downpipes rot and second gear can wear

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭Keith186

    Nice one, good to know.
Latest years I seen online are 98's so they'll probably have a fair bit of rot by now if they were gonna get it bad.

If there's no decent Thundercats do ye reckon a Fazer would be a good sevond option?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭defiant12

The Fazers use a de-tuned Thundercat engine and share a lot of parts, also a very good bike.

It's down to what kind of bike you want. You won't go wrong with a tidy CBR600F or a 'Cat. If you want a naked bike then a Fazer/Hornet are ideal.
You should get mint examples of any of these bikes at the upper end of your budget...

    I'm looking at a 2004 Fazer 600 tomorrow for a bit over €2k.

There's only been a couple 04's floating around at that price, first guy never came back to me after arranging a deal subject to inspection.

Any tips on what to look out for. I was doing some googling and found it was being advertised as far back as Oct 10 and then in Jan 11. Should I be worried now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭Keith186

The 04 Fazer was a piece of dirt, very poor condition.

Ended up getting a low mileage mint 99 Hornet 600 for €1850 in the end so happy out!
