What are the best pubs in Drogheda, in your opinion?

I want to get a good idea because i'll be going out to enjoy a few nights there!

Depends on what you're looking for. Gleesons and Clarkes are proper pubs in the center of town. McPhails if you're looking for the cool, crowded weekend spot. O'Caseys has a nice pool room upstairs with a half decent jukebox.

 Clarkes??? ...A lot of people told me that Clarkes was the one pub to avoid, but I wouldn't know to be honest!

McPhails used to be good, now it's turning into some sort of 'drop off drug location', attracting scumbags and youth below 18.

Anyway, thanks for your reply. :)

May I refer you to this thread. Much of it still holds true.

Try the New Central. The recession has mad it more interesting.

No Paddy, I see no reason to avoid Clarkes. It's a good little spot, cool **** behind the bar. Old shop style stuff, scales and the like. Start the night there, have a few before it gets crowded then head downhill into town.

The thread that garrincha posted has some valuable info and funny stuff in it.

I don't know about McPhails being some 'drop off drug location', there will be a few joints smoked in the beer garden but that's not a big deal.

i think the disco bars in town killed off a few generations even before the recession, now its mostly the 18-20 age range, i remember the 90's the westcourst used to rock and nearly all the bars were over 23, best bar now would be the black bull for the mature crowd

It's a good thing it's on the Dublin Road otherwise they would never find it :-)

Been in the revamped pheasant last week. Hell of a lot better than what it ever was.

I know its not exactly central, but for anyone who lives up that way should definitely check it out if you havent yet.

I love Sarsfields for the music and Mother Hughes is great for sport.

McHughs is top notch for gigs too as is the Purple Room.

I can safely say that I won't be going anywhere near the Star and Crescent below the Purple Room.

Crap music mostly and underage people being let in. Met a girl who said she was older than she clearly really was. They turn a blind eye to the weed being smoked there and I hate drugs and I felt paranoid and uneasy around that weed. Just wanted to get the hell out of there to be honest! Avoid that spot I'd say.

Star and Crescent is grand. You get a few underage people mainly due to the fact that they host parties out the back. If a bit of weed is gonna put you off(havent noticed myself all the times I have been there) you may as well stay at home, thats tame.

Ah it's a really nice venue but I get the impression it was built to control the dodgy people in the town and keep a lot of them in the same place.

I've noticed that there are some sound people there but it can get intimidating, it was for me last night. There was a glass thrown down from the balcony above. Could of hit someone, a guy pointed it out and he left soon after cos nothing was done about it.

About the weed, has an effect on me cos I had an illness in the past and it gives a bad vibe to me , happens to some people.

The staff don't look like they are enjoying themselves.

The DJ's keep to themselves, they play better music, the stuff they really like before the place gets busy before midnight and then it's all rubbish chart stuff.

I think the guards will intervene if anything dangerous happens but they understand what the place is like and let the odd dodgy thing happen.

There is a lot of people I wouldn't give a bad look to there, more so than earth or fusion, a lot more scumbags. I try to keep as calm and relaxed as possible to be honest, true anywhere but especially here.

I won't be spending the whole night there again to be honest.

I'm sorry, but i'd say the Star and Crescent is the worst pub in Drogheda(IMO). Far too many scumbags to be honest.

Every single time I walked in there, there was a fight going on, or at least someone trying to start a fight. No one could possibly enjoy the night with all this bloody carry on.

I don't know how anyone could recommend this pub(Star and Crescent) to be honest.

    Thanks anyway!

Hmm fair enough! I've always had a good time there, I would generally go on fridays though when its fairly quiet.

Not sure why, but I always enjoy reading people's opinions on the venues in the town. :)

im a bit older so it's clarkes for me, best pub in the town imo

if it's during the day i like to go to the railway tavern

Ah yeah, I'll definitely hit the star bar on a Friday instead. Come to think of it I think I liked it a bit better when I was there once before :)

McPhails would get my vote in terms of atmosphere. Star Bar is not really a complete pub though to be honest, it's more of a disco-pub.

My sister had very bad experiences in Star Bar. She came home one night crying over something before, didn't really tell us what happened....but she said she was never going there again. She said that all of the bad nights came through that pub.

Sarsfields is currently my favourite pub in Drogheda, followed by maybe Hogs & Heifers.

Lads if we are honest Drogheda is pretty much a dive, no comparison to nights out in Dublin.

Not sure I can justify paying into earth any more, too expensive.

Nowadays, I don't know how anyone can still pay into a nightclub to be honest. There is no way in hell i'd ever pay in, far too expensive. Anyway, i'd much rather go to a pub.

I heard Dublin was great for gigs.

Jesus what a stupid comment . Dublin can be the biggest dive in the country and rough as hell depending on where you go , i have had some great nights out in Drogheda , same as ive had some great nights out in Dundalk or galway or waterford etc . Dublin obviously has lots of choice due to its size but theres also lots negative stuff with socialising in the place , the price of everything for starters .Really irritates me when people in Drogheda constantly refer to the place in negative terms . Move away if its that bad .
