just got a nice vintage English mtb with 'Reynolds 531 All Terrain butted tubes', brand is 'British Eagle'
Is a reynolds 531 mountain bike rare? Ive seen an old Raleigh with 501 tubing

gonna build up into a lightweight singlespeed or maybe a 29r

    I owned one !!
They were about back in the late 80's early 90's but it was not a material which was good for off road bikes..
I think the raleigh pro mtb teams of the time used it initially but changed to oversized tubing fairly quickly.

it looks like oversize tubing but I didnt have my caliper, the tubing gets narrower on the toptube where it meets the seat tupe lug

I have a British Eagle touristique from late 80's. Its 531ST which i think was made slightly thicker for carrying touring weights. i have it built as a single speed. It is really comfortable. I think any genuine 531 steel bike is worth using as the ride quality is superb (in my opinion)
