    Looking for some ideas here.
I'm a qualified fire alarm engineer with 2 yrs experience, I live on the Westmeath/Roscommon border. I also have an LGV C licence.
I've been looking for work now for around 6 months, and things aint good at all as you all know.
Does anyone work as a fire alarm engineer? Or would anyone know which agencies to register with for this kind of work?
What about as an LGV C driver?
I've registered with Manpower, Monster, JobsIreland, and sent cv to a few other smaller agencies.
I'm pulling my hair out
Tried applying for all kinds of jobs, but think being an engineer puts me at a disadvantage for unskilled work as employers know your gonna leave as soon as something better turns up.
I know thousands are in same predicament, but coming from UK, i'm not as clued up on the Irish jobs market.
Also, would being a Brit count against me in your honest opinions?
    Any advice, anything

Theres lots of us in the same boat mate. I lived in Manchester for years and am considering moving back there this summer if I cant find work when I finish college in May. I dont believe being a Brit will count against you in looking for work. You might meet the odd twat in the pubs that gives you hassle but when it comes to work I think most employers wont be bothered as long as you can and will do the job. Best of luck in the job hunt.

Anyone on here work in the fire/intruder alarm industry?
Where did you see your job? what agency etc?
I've read through the agency thread, but curious as there tends to be specific agencies that specialise in these kind of jobs, or at least in the UK there is.

Firstly, I'm not very familiar with your particular industry, however, don't simply rely on the agencies. Get on the phone and call the companies you would like to send your CV to. Ask who the Hiring Manager is, find out whether they are hiring or not, tell them you would like to send in a copy of your CV. At least it will give you a better picture of what's going on in the industry and gets you some contacts. Put yourself in control of what happens. A lot of companies have postponed using agencies due to reducing costs etc.

Also, check to see whether they are on LinkedIn (I've just checked and there are some there) E.g. :

Lara Fire and Security has been providing Domestic and Commercial Security and Monitoring Services across Ireland for over 20 years. We specialise in all your Security needs from Intruder Alarms, Closed Circuit TV, Digital Video Recording, Fire Detection Systems, Emergency Lights, Access Control and Monitoring for Alarms, CCTV and Fire Systems.

    Guardian Fire & Security
Specialties: Fire Alarm Servicing, Fire Alarm Sales, Fire Alarm Design & Commissioning

    Best of Luck!

I couldnt see the fact that you are British being held against you. The problem is that we are heading for a semi third world like situtation hear with unimployment and poverty, thats the problem mate not your accent.

I love this kind of over the top waffle. It makes me smile.

OP, your origin certainly wont go against you when it comes to getting a job. At the end of the day, the person most suited to the role will get it, irrespective of whether they are from Ireland or not.

I wouldn't put too much faith in the agencies. I found them to be particularly unfruitful when I moved job a few years ago. They promise an awful lot but never really deliver. I would stick to the employer searches on the sites myself. As others have said, a more personal approach might help as well. Best of luck.

    Cheers all.
I've sent out many cv's to many companies. I rang ADT last week but they have nothing.
I'll give the linkedin idea a shot, I had an account if I can remember my login details at all. I need to get more contacts, I used to know a few people in the industry in UK, but none here.
My situation isn't really any different to thousands of others at the moment. I suppose I was hoping maybe if any Boards members were in the business then this might be a start.
Best of luck to you all who are in same situation, I'm sure things are gonna pick up for us all sometime ;)

Most of the british high st stores i worked had that work done by irish engineers empployed by british firms. The companies were names on the stickers on the fire extingushers. Maybe you get some names from local stores an approach those companies.
