Though it's not been without incident - Abhinav Bindra (who won India's first ever Olympic Gold medal in Sydney in Men's Air Rifle and wound up on the front cover of half the world's sports magazines as a result) had all manner of fun with paperwork:
Arrived into sydney, no gun permit available on arrival, rifle confiscated, drama begins!
I mean, Ireland's awful for paperwork, but I can't remember us ever confiscating an air rifle from one of the world's most famous shooters before. Nice one Australia...

    From the ISSF website:
Croatia's Pejcic won the 10m Air Rifle Women final
Three Olympic Quota Places were awarded to the medallists: Croatia’s Pejcic, Iran’s Ahmadi and Ukraine’s Tykhova.

The 2008 Olympic Bronze medallist, Croatia’s Snjezana Pejcic won the opening match of the 2011 ISSF World Cup in Sydney, the 10m Air Rifle Women event.

The Croatian shooter secured the Gold medal and an Olympic Quota place with a total score of 502.6 points, winning a close final played on the thin line of tenths. Entering the final match in the lead with a qualification score of 399 hits, the 28-year old shooter marked 103.6 points throughout the final round, finishing on the highest step of the podium with 0.4 points of advantage on her followers.

Three Olympic Quota places had to be assigned at today’s 10m Air Rifle Women Final, the first match of this year’s ISSF Combined World Cup in Sydney, Australia.

The second Quota and the Silver medal went to Iran’s Elaheh Amadi, an unexpected protagonist of today’s match. The 28-year old athlete, ranked 48th in the world, had never made it to a World Cup final round, before. Qualified with 399 points, tied to Pejcic, she shot consistently throughout the whole match, securing a spot on the podium with a total of 502.2 points.

The 2010 European Champion, Serbia’s Andrea Arsovic, also had started the match with the highest qualification score, 399 points. But, after the first five shots, the Serbian shooter sled down in the placements, closing her round in sixth place with a frustrating 9.6 last shot.

The third Olympic Quota place went so to Ukraine’s flag bearer Darya Tykhova, 25-year old, who did not miss the chance to pocket the Bronze medal. The young athlete started the round with a qualification score of 398 points, just one point behind the leading trio. But then, shooting a consistent final of 103.6 points, she climbed up in third, finishing on the podium with 501.7 points. Tykhova, a 2005 Junior European Champion, had already qualified to represent Ukraine at the 2008 Games, finishing then in twentieth place.

The six-time World Cup medallist Wu Liuxi of China closed the match in fourth with 501.2 points. She had already won an Olympic Quota at last year’s ISSF World Championship in Munich. Her 22-year old teammate Xie Jieqiong followed in fifth place with 501.1 points, while Czech Republic’s Adela Sykorova and Germany’s Barbara Lechner ended up in seventh and sixth palce with 500.5 and 499.6 points, respectively.

More than 700 shooters coming from 68 countries are competing in these days in Sydney, where the second leg of this year’s ISSF World Cup Series is held. The competition, which started today, will last right to the 31st of March. Fifteen events are scheduled, and 34 Olympic Quota places, the “entrance tikets” to the Games” will be assigned throughout the championship.

The next medal match, the 10m Air Pistol Women final, will take place this afternoon, at 4.40 PM Sydney Time (GMT+11). Follow the competition on www.issf-sports.org

    From the ISSF website:
Salukvadze flies to her 7th Olympics

She had won Bronze and hugged the Russian winner at the 2008 Olympic Games, while her country was on war against Russia. She’s now ready to go for her seventh Olympics with a different spirit, and a record to break in her sights.

She has been competing in sixth different Olympic editions and she’s ready to move forward, on the road leading to London 2012. Georgia’s most durable Olympic athlete, the Pistol shooter Nino Salukvadze, won today’s 10m Air Pistol Women event at the ISSF Combined World Cup in Sydney, Australia, securing an Olympic Quota Place. The quota goes to the country, but the three time Olympic medallist already knows she’s going to be part of the team flying to London.

“I am ready to go to London, to participate in my seventh Olympiad” Nino said wearing the Gold medal with a total score of 485.5 (385+485.5) points. “That’s going to be a sort of record. Nobody else made it in Georgia.”

Nino Salukvadze, 42, started her Olympic adventure back in 1988, when she debuted on the Games’ scene by winning a Gold and a Silver medal in Seoul. From there on, the shooter from Tbilisi participated in each and every Olympic edition, right up to the 2008 Games in Beijing. A memorable competition for Salukvaze and the Georgian team. Nino indeed won a Bronze medal, hugging the Russian winner and dedicating the medal to the people of Georgia, while her country was under strike of the Russian aviation.

“Things are better now, the situation in my country is slowly developing for the better.” Nino said. “I will go to the 2012 Games with a different spirit.”

Today’s Silver medal went to Finland’s Mira Suhonen, 25, ranked ninth in the world. She finished in second with a total score of 484.0 (386+98.0) points, securing her first World Cup Silver medal. She had already finished in the spotlight a few months ago, as she won an Olympic Quota Place for Finland at the 2010 ISSF World Championship in Munich.

Following her, Ukraine’s 2004 Olympic medallist Olena Kostevych secured the Bronze with 483.6 (386+97.6) points, pocketing an Olympic Quota to participate in the 2012 Olympic Games.

The third Quota went to Taipei’s Tien Chia Chen, 27, a true outsider ranked 73rd in the world. Tien closed the match in fourth place with a total score of 481.9 (386+95.9) points, 1.7 points behind the medallists. She had finished in the spotlights several times on a continental level, winning two South East Asian Championships in 2001 and in 2003, as well as an Asian Championship Bronze medal in 2009. But she had never qualified to represent her country at the Games, before.

The home champion, Australia’s Dina Aspandiyarova, ended up in fifth place with 480.8 (382+98.8) points finishing 1.1 point far from the Olympic qualification. The Australian shooter had squeezed into the final match by passing through a three-way shoot-off, a stressing situation, as she said. “It was only the second shoot-off of my life.” The first time being a shoot-off to get into the world championship final, last August. “It’s a very pressurized situation. I managed to hold my nerves in the final, but overall I did not quite achieve my goals for the event!”

Aspandiyarova was followed by Serbia’s 21-year old shooter Bobana Velickovic, sixth with 479.7 points, by France’s Goberville (seventh with 479.7 points), and by China’s Sun Qi (eighth with 479.5 points.)

The 2011 ISSF Combined World Cup in Sydney will continue tomorrow with three medal matches. Rifle and Pistol shooters will be on the stage for the 50m Rifle 3 Positions Men final, starting at 12.40, and the 10m Air Pistol Men final, kicking-off at 2.20 PM. Pressure will then be back on shotgun shooters, with the Trap Women final starting at 4.45 PM (all times GMT+11).

Men's 3x40 final looks like shaping up very nicely indeed. Last three in on 1165 by the look of things, very close at that end. Zhu Qinan out in front on 1176, five points ahead of his nearest follower, but it's close enough between the rest of them to make for a very interesting final indeed.

Derek's in 7th now on 71. 2nd place is 72, behind a 74, so he's not far off the pace at all.

Derek did not have a good last day. Finished with 23 and 20, ended up in 28th. Good shooting, but that last 25 cost him. There were several 50s shot though. Looks like it was a good final, may see footage eventually.

Jen Mcintosh had a good shoot in the 3P. Had a 91 and 98 in the standing but shot 576 in the end, for 15th place in her elimination. Comfortably through to the qualification in any case. With a bit of luck, she's in with a shot at the final at that rate if her standing goes a bit better and she gets an extra point or two in the kneeling. Great run with a 591 by Jamie Beyerle of the USA. If anyone's got a shot at breaking the 3P world record in the next few years, it's her, assuming Pfeilschifter doesn't just break it and set the bar a little higher again herself.

Not to let this fall by the wayside, the prone final looks very interesting. Eric Uptagrafft is in the lead on 599-48X, with some stunning groups too, mind, like this

    and this
    DynamicImage.aspx?cs=1176&ecode=FR60PR&grst=SE&imgtype=small_6img_zoomed&srid=133242&year=2011
and the one nine is only just out. Cruel one in an otherwise very solid string. Second is Weiyi Wang on 597, then everyone from third to eighth is on 596, so the final should be very interesting. Some good names to see, too, who wouldn't be in every final. Great to see Harald Stenvaag in there too. Living proof that talent has a very long shelf life.

BTW, in case you think your training is tough, spare a thought for Tomoyuki Matsuda. A member of the Japanese national team, who were in the Japanese Airgun Nationals on the epicenter of the quake and who went through the tsunami while in full kit (not fun for rifle shooters), he went on to win the air pistol match in Sydney.

    Now that is mental focus...

    From the ISSF website:
Japanese champ survived the tsunami and competes in Sydney

    27032011_Japan.jpg

Fighting in the mud to save their lives in the middle of a Tsunami just two weeks ago, five courageous Japanese shooters came to compete at the 2011 ISSF Combined World Cup in Sydney.

They witnessed the natural disaster which wounded their homeland, the last March 11, when one of the greatest earthquake ever registered hit Japan, and had to run and swim to save their lives. Seventeen days later, they decided to share their feelings, while competing at the ISSF World Cup Stage in Sydney.

The shooting team was right there, on the epicenter, when the endless earthquake struck the country. Japan’s National Air Gun Championship, scheduled in those days, was indeed taking place in Ishinomaki, Miyagi prefecture. Exactly atop of the epicenter. Exactly there, where the tsunami hit with its uncontrollable wave of destruction.

There was no escape: all the participants, all the Japanese shooters, experienced the shock and the following tsunami while they were in town for their last preparations, and found themselves at the centre of the disaster.

Moments of terror. Their hotel was swept over by the tsunami. Water and mud everywhere, while they were trapped by the overwhelming power of the elements. All the shooters and their official had to fight to save their lives while the water was changing the landscape around them.

And the aftershock was even worst, some athletes said here in Sydney. Once your life is safe, you start thinking about the others. Then, a dolorous search starts. Incredibly, all athletes were safe, but it took hours and even days to regroup them, and since the telephone lines were crippled after the chaos the Association’s official couldn’t confirm the safety of all shooters for days.

“Every time an aftershock came I was frightened.” rifle shooter Midori Yajima said. “I was wearing the shooting jacket, and I could not move quickly. It was scary.”

Another rifle shooter, Seiko Iwata shared Yajima’s comments. “After the earthquake, we just wanted to leave the place. We wanted to go back home, But we with the gasoline shortage we couldn’t move from there.”

When finally the telephones started working again, the good news came: all the shooters of the national team were alive.

In spite of the shock and of the difficult situation, the majority of them went back to their hometowns within the next few days. And, with a typical Japanese self-control, they soon resumed their preparation for the 2011 ISSF World Cup in Sydney.

But how should someone train, in such a situation? Where can you find the mental power to file such an event, and to go back to your normal training routine? Japan’s clay target team withdrew its participation in the World Cup. And only five courageous Rifle and Pistol shooters, including the two-time Pistol World Champion Tomoyuki Matsuda, decided to come to Sydney.

As a police officer from Kanagawa Prefectural Police, Matsuda admitted that he once considered withdrawal from the Cup. His practice schedule was messed up and he had to come down to Sydney without enough training. The reigning world champion confessed that the last time he practiced at 50-meter range had been at the end of February. And, even if he did not talked about that, we can imagine the stress on his shoulders, after the disaster.

Matsuda, who had been elected “2010 Shooter of the Year” just a few months ago, competed fiercely and managed to clinch the title in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol on Thursday, 24 March, without having his coach, Emil Dushanov, on his side. Dushanov, a Bulgarian pistol coach, decided indeed to leaver Japan after the earthquake, to go back to his home town Sophia.

The Japanese marksman added another Gold to his medal tally at the World Cup by winning the Men’s 50m Pistol on Sunday, 27 March.

“I think I gained positive momentum from the earthquakes.” The Japanese shooter said, stepping on the podium without a smile. “There are people who are forced to have tougher life than I do. I left my family in Japan to come here, and I had to achieve the result.”

“The pressure was high. I felt the responsibility to perform well. I guess the results came from the responsibility I was feeling,” said Matsuda, who dedicated his two victories to his wounded homeland.

“Japan has received a lot of supports including fund-raise from people all over the world. As a representative of Japan shooting, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the supports. Everyone here also asked me if I was okay while I was in Japan. I was touched by them.”

The Japanese shooter said then that he would be competing at the next ISSF World Cup Stage in Korea, starting the sixth of April. “My family is safe, I have to think about the competitions. I really hope that my victories can somehow help the people of Japan.” Once again, a prove of the mental power of this extraordinary athlete.
