I was just thinking about strange aviation stories where extreme circumstances occurred and aviation history was made. there was a post earlier about civilians landing airliners and such or the story of an engineer accidentally taking off in a lightening jet, Or m favorite i thought of this after hearing about an f15e going down in Libya and by the sounds of it trying to make it to a safe location before the crew bail out. In Vietnam there was an incident with two f4 phantoms on a strike mission from a carrier. both planes got fragged and one was loosing fuel badly. the other pilot then told him to lower his arrestor hook and slowly he approached from under the stricken f4 and using the nose of his plane pushed the other f4 foward until they reached friendly territory and finally over safe territory both crew bailed out and were free to be picked up by friendly forces. this was widely criticized as both jets were lost but cpt Pardo who preformed the push maneuver got a silver star along with his RIO 1st Lt wayne almost twenty years later. they dramatized this incident in an episode of JAG.

There is the story about the Israeli F-15 that got it's right wing torn off by an A-4 in a mock dogfight. The A-4 was destroyed but the F-15 landed OK. The pilot got in trouble for not ejecting and disobeying a superior officer but was then rewarded for saving the airframe which was repaired and is still flying today.

Discovery butchered the story they put together and put on TV, made the whole thing look like a hoax.

There's a story of an F-8 Crusader, taking off and doing a full circuit (of an airfield or carrier i can't remember which) with it's wings folded in the up position.

    TO THE INTERNETZZZZZZ

Ok, it's wiki, but they mention a number of instances of the wings up take off
