Ok so I'm completely new to triathlon and am hoping to take part in my first triathlon this summer. I'm of average fitness. I run about 5 times a week. Mainly between 5 and 8km, longest runs being about 12km. Do a good bit of cycling in the summer time however I have never done a swimming session before. I'm trying to devise a training programme but can't seem to pin down exactly what i should be doing and how much. Are there any good resources online or any halhidgeon type plans for triathletes?? My aim will be to finish the triathlon more than getting a good time as it will be my first. Will be able to gym 5 mornings a week and long run/cycle weekends....Anybody have any ideas for me??Thanks guys

I have a friend who is a pretty high level triathlon coach. I can send you his details in a pm if you like.

Youll get around the bike and run, as you sound good for it. But you will need to work hard on the swim. How well can you swim right now?

Whenever i try to do lengths of the pool i find myself tiring very easily. My technique doesn't seem to be very good. Would it be better to start going to the pool and doing numbers of lengths steadily building upon then or trying to do sessions like 4x 200 meters with breaks?? Which do you reckon would be more beneficial for triathlon?

Try to get a swim coach to have a look at your technique. Most leisure centres will have someone you can hire. No point working away without knowing youre doing it wrong. Intervals (200m sets) are good, but alternate them with longer sessions as soon as you can, or vary your pace, easy - moderate - hard for each set.

Slightly off topic, im thinking of buying a generic tri frame I have the group sets from my road bike, all I need are aero bars and gear shifters and brakes. Has anyone ever done this or would have any advice on doing so , I spoke to a bike shop and they said that they would gladly do the labour for me.

    Hi,

I would strongly recommend joining your local Tri Club. You will meet plenty of people of the same level and those of advanced levels who will assist you with training/race/nutrition/gear advice.

RE swimming - coached sessions are the way to go. They will correct technique and get you swimming 750/1500m comfortably in weeks.

All the best with it, after your first race you'll be hooked...
