That's a big car. There used to be one of those in navy blue poking it's distinctive chrome nose out behind a house on a back road near Loughrea in Galway. I spotted it once while getting a lift in a truck about 20 years ago but never managed to track it down after.

Fantastic! Great to see the car turn up in such good condition.
I could be wrong about this but I would bet thats the car that was owned new by the Earl of Iveagh from Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park.

I was told the car was brought to England after he died around 20 years ago and has remained there ever since.

Maybe its not but a HUGE coincidence that another Irish reg'd '49 Ford V8 also in light grey ended up there still in lovely condition!

The navy blue car that was lying up in Galway was a '51. It is now living in Wicklow by a guy that also has an original Irish '49 Ford.

Why so is it called a 'Shoebox'?
Pity it will probably lose its reg now.

Good to know it survived. Thanks for info.

I think that car was assembled in Cork. There were quite a few of these cars used as taxi's in cork. How was it such a big seller if the country was broke?
I think it will keep its registration as it was exported before 1990. Any irish car exported before then keeps its plate, just registers it at their nearest DVLA...

239 V8 id imagine?fairly obvious that the car was always kept indoors
during its life, hence its excellent condition

Cool old car, i do love the look of those. And the sound of the old flathead v8s, they may be about as technologicly advanced as a sledgehammer and not even all that powerful, but they sound so lovely
