Sonny Pike is a good candidate. An age-old story of a country thinking it has the greatest thing on earth on their hands only for him to end up on the scrap heap.
Whatever happened to Sonny Pike?" asks Dan Williamson. "I'm certain that years ago I watched a documentary about him and learned that he was England's brightest-ever prospect. I am also sure that he trained with the Ajax youth side."

Sonny - the nephew of ex-Tottenham striker Mark Falco - became semi-famous after was invited to join Ajax's Academy of Excellence at the age of seven. Sadly, as this website explains, his dreams of a professional career ended a couple of years ago. "Sonny is currently living near Dundee, and is studying psychology at Dundee University. He found the pressures of top-class football too much, and in 2003 decided to pursue a more regular career - having been privy to sports psychologists, he decided to follow that path. Nonetheless, he still has a fervent passion for the game, playing Sunday league football for Dryburgh Saints, as well as weekly five-a-side fixtures against other students."

"He is currently training for a Scottish FA coaching certificate, and as part of this, he coaches two primary school teams in the area. Although he doesn't support a local team, he goes to matches regularly, purely for his love of the game. Sonny says that he's much happier away from professional football. The pressure placed on him by his club, agents, sponsors and, to a lesser extent, the media made him suffer a nervous breakdown in October 2000, whilst still part of the Ajax youth squad."

"I couldn't take it, and I got ill, really screwed up," Sonny adds. "I stopped going to training and stuff, because I was so screwed up I couldn't hack it. Looking back, it's amazing how low I was. Ajax completely forgot about me, they didn't want to know, but as soon as I was better, they acted like they'd always been there for me. I realised how superficial it is at that level, and if I hadn't got back to form I bet they would have turfed me out. That's why I packed it in, it's so unstable. I guess it was during that period that I realised how much psychologists can help people, and I suppose I took it from there."

Freddy Adu is actually about 33

Despite the fact that he's grown several inches since his international debut and has lived in the US since he was in primary school...

Lazily I'm using Wiki to answer this instead of typing....how do people miss out on people who are on TV, radio etc a lot?
Joanna Noëlle Blagden Levesque (born December 20, 1990), professionally known as JoJo, is an American recording artist and actress. After competing on the television show, America's Most Talented Kids, she was noticed by record producer Vincent Herbert who asked her to audition for Blackground Records.

    She's 21 now and all grown up....:pac:

Take your pick from any of the top squads in the last decade. When they arrive their supporters hype them up so as you'd think they were going to do fates and s41t wonders.

The only Man U player of the last decade who lived up to the hype was C Ronaldo. Rooney came close. Torres was going to be world emperor and win it all dragging Liverpool FC behind him. Arshavin was the missing link between Arsenal coming third and being Barcelona 2.0.

So he passed for a 6 year old at the age of 12. When he moved to the states?

    Not ****ing likely.

The same stuff gets said about Obafemi Martins and it, too, is bull****.

Some bright spark in here also tried to say the same thing about Roman Lukaku, despite the fact that he was born and raised in Belgium, where his father was a pro. Footballer.

As a Leeds fan the one that sticks out to me like a sore thumb is Roque Junior. Massive excitement when he came in from AC Milan on loan, gives away a goal and gets sent off on his debut and we conceded something like 24 goals in his 7 matches.

    What a flop.

On the subject of players being much older than they say they are, apparently this is a well known tactic. If you have a 17 year old with decent talent and no birth cert, its a common tactic to say he's 14 or 15 to help him on his way. Obviously he looks great in comparison to his peers.

We all remember Moyes suggesting Yakuba was a "Nigerian 26".

Similar rumours obviously surround Adu. Also the great George Weah was apparently much older than he suggested.

On the actual subject of players who didn't live up to their hype. One word. Zlatan.

Zlatan should be nowhere near this thread.

at the end of the day he's won league after league after league on the trot, and looks like doing so again this year.

    that's not by accident.

he underperforms in the Champions League, granted, but he certainly, in a broad sense anyway, has fulfilled the bulk of his potential.

anthony le tallec, where's the article that said when ronaldo and himself moved to their respective clubs, and the article said their paths would surely cross as two of the best players in the world. LOLZ

Its not about fulfilling his potential though, its about living up to the hype. I have heard so much about him since he was 17. Just for me personally he's being the biggest disappointment.

First person i thought of when i saw this thread.

On personal experience, he is one of the worst players i have ever seen in a Rangers jersey. He's even struggling to make his mark at Motherwell nowadays.

    Robbie Keane?

Im not saying he didnt fulfill his potential, he's still a great player, but there was a lot hype when he was younger, especially around the Inter move, you would swear he was gonna be the next Ronaldo

Things like this happening don't help those rumours.
Nigeria have dropped 15 players from the Under-17 team after the majority of the squad failed an age test, NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire said in a press statement on Tuesday.

“Head coach John Obuh explained that the players were dropped based on performance as well as the results of the MRI tests conducted on all the players recently,” he said.

The players dropped from the squad are Kabiru Borgo, Abiodun Akande, Ariyo Olubukola, Habeeb Bello, Deji Joel, Yakubu Azeez, Ogungbe Ganiyu, Orji Alu, Justice Chinedu, Chinedu Udegha, Amadi Moses, Solomon Enudi,Dubem Awaziem, Esse Joseph Junior and Olaitan Gambari.

Zlatan was class at Ajax in his early years

    And he still is....

I'm not sure what a player who has played for Barca, Juve, Milan and Inter, wining titles at all of them and accolades like Serie A golden boot and player of the year has to do to win people over. I'm convinved the Zlatan bashing is as a result of Dunphy having a go at him

If thats a flop of a career...?!?
