    Hi All,

I just recently registered as a self-employed QS. When i sent my first invoice to a customer (a building contractor) he said he would have to deduct 35% and give me a 'pink-slip' for the balance. While i am familiar with this in regards to trade sub-contractors i didnt think it was the same for service providers?? i havent employed the services of an accountant yet as my earnings are very small so have noone to ask.

    all suggestions welcome.

    Thanks.

    Hi BartooseBoy,

Basically as long as you are not doing any physical work then he should not have deducted you 35% tax. Even if he is subbing this element of the work too you, you are still not a "subcontractor" for RCT purposes. You should have no problem filling this pink form in and getting the money back from the revenue once your taxes are up to date however I would go back to the building contractor and explain the situation to him.

If you need any help, feel free to PM me, I am an accountant who has had extensive exposure to the construction industry(for my troubles)

    Yours etc.......

    Bob
