    Guys

I'm a 10 handicapper, drive the ball slightly longer than average, as a broad rule of thumb what shaft should i be looking at - Stiff, extra stiff, regular ?

I do intend to go get fitted at some stage but not for a little while yet.

There is no broad rule of thumb. Your shaft fitting will take into account your swing speed, spin rate, your height etc etc and asking on a forum what shaft you should be using is guess work.
Go get fitted by a professional club fitter who knows what they are talking about.

Quite right. There are single figure handicappers who are 60+ and they need senior flex. It's mainly club head speed though.
All I can say, is that if' you're off 10 then you could get away with a blue shaft or a balck shaft but not quite a lime one or white one.

Depends what you mean by 'drive the ball slightly longer than average'. How far are we talking?

Best thing to do is to just bite the bullet and go get fitted for one.
It may seem like you are spending a bit more money. But id rather get it right 1st time
over going for say a regular flex shaft only to realise after a few weeks/months that a
stiff flex would work better for you.

Very generally speaking the faster your swing the stiffer your shaft needs to be!

There is no british standard however when it comes to how manufacturers make there shafts! For example, a stiff callaway shaft could have the same flexibility as a regular ping shaft...

That's one of the problems.........there's no standard for regular or stiff. Some people like to say they use a stiff and feel that a regular is for wimps......hence some manufacturers feed the ego.

i would have to agree with the 3 above the only way you'll know what shaft is for you is to go get fitted

Swing speed will be a pretty good initial rough indicator though. If you're knocking up around 95-110 mph or so, most will be using a Stiff shaft. Above that then you're into XS territory.

Would also be a good idea to try out 3 or 4 of your mates' drivers at the range some evening so that you can see the difference.

With a shaft that's not stiff enough for you, you will tend to get some nice snappy hooks

With one that's too stiff, you will tend to push all of your shots off to the right.

Fitting is the final definitive answer alright, but plenty of groundwork you can do yourself in order to make a decision that will probably be good enough for you until you lose another couple of shots.

    My 2c.
