Mixing Dubstep

Hi, I've been messing about with some dubstep tracks, particularly the two step/garage variants, but I'm having trouble mixing them.

At the moment I'm just doing fast cuts, and bringing in intros very early on to try and achieve some sort of blend, etc. Functional but not fantastic.

    Have you got any tips?

In addition, a quick question about beatmatching.. I hear of plenty of people matching the snares rather than the kicks? What about two-step, where the snares are all over the place?

    Cheers.

In 2 step garage, the snares are on every second beat, just like in 4x4 stuff.

The kicks can vary but not usually that much, once you have the snares in order you should be fine.

Theres no one way to mix future garage-y stuff, you just have to practice with the tunes themselves, some tracks might be a bit mental with the placement of their kicks and there will usually be a good bit of swing on the hats but you should get used to it.

You say dubstep so I assume you mean the newer stuff. In most of the late 90s early 00s 2step the snare is on the 2 and just before or just after the 4.
Thats not set in stone obviously but it was common enough to be the norm back then and it hasn't change much since if they are doing it right :)

It doesn't really matter if you have snares coming down on 2/4 and and another on the 3 or whatever because the swing is all in the hats anyway.

So like always, its just a case of finding tunes that match.
