When Ken Doherty announced Mark Williams into the arena on Saturday night he said that he was currently provisionally ranked no. 1 in the world. Even though he lost the match how could this change as Higgins was not in the event?

Williams is provissionally the world number one as it stands, but as the rankings work on a two year rolling list Higgins is still the number one, but just about.

The new system sees three cut off points during the season which means the top sixteen can actually change and established players for example Stephen Hendry who is at 13 but provissionally placed 21 could find himself having to qualify for certain ranking events, also if you make it into the top 16 after the UK then you get an automatic spot in the Masters.

World Snooker now has a proper ranking structure which rewards players throughout the season and not just at the end of each season.

Also with more events planned for next season, expect that top sisteen to keep changing.

That's for sure. Certainly shakes things up. Mark Williams up to number 2 and Ronnie down to number 11. It's all over the place from a few years ago. No harm I suppose.

Ken has done well to stay in the top 32. I presume Sheffield will see big changes again though.

Is it true that Stevens is provisionally number 10?
