Upgrading car speaker system

    Hello!

I got 200 euro as a birthday present to go towards a remap. Since, I have found out from Eugene Walsh in Belfast that my little turbo may not take a remap due to mileage so I figure I may as well put it into upgrading the speaker system of the wagon.

There are stock tweeters in the door by the mirrors which are disconnected as I have some coaxial Alpine speakers in the car which are utter kak.

I am pretty sure there is a resonant frequency in my Mark 4 Golf doors which gets hit regularly by the tweeter. Not the speakers fault I admit.

With that in mind I may get two new, but better, one way speakers for the front doors and re connect the stock tweeters. I may also, out of my own money, get a decent passive EQ so I can fine tune the setup and keep that in the glove compartment.

While I am at it I could chuck the speakers currently in the car into the rear but Ill have to think about that.

Would anyone know what the car audio speaker market has for me?

Live songs especially are ripping through my ears when Im on the motorway. The car gets loud enough but that resonant frequency or what ever it is is loud even when the volume is low enough so I need rid of that.

As a sound engineer student I have no bother hooking up passive EQ's and generally messing about like that but I need to try and save my ears when I want to listen to music in the wagon but the car audio market is one I do not know well enough.

The Sony radio EQ is useless for getting rid of it. The radio is similar to the one I linked to. I have the blue one :p

If the Alpines are actually rather good speakers then I may see if I can disconnect the built in tweeter and rewire the stock ones back in or maybe the passive EQ could do the job but I would need to make sure the bands can be positioned in the right place.

I could also go a step further and put some felt in behind the speaker mount to try and detach it from the aluminium backing. Every little helps.

    Thanks all
    bbk

ps. Halfords is just a reference, I fully indeed to do a bit of research and get the best deal I can. :p

Ive ordered from car audio direct but they dont do kenwood.
Which takes me to the next point=kenwood do the best cheap speakers. Get a couple of seperates in the 30 quid range stg and thats as good as its going to get. While your at it get some dynamat and mount the speakers on it to remove door buzzing.

Problem with crossovers is any speaker that has one needs a higher power fom the headunit to sound good and without an amp it will sound worse. The normal thing to do is amp the fronts using 2 of a four channel amp and then bridge the other two to run a subwoofer in the boot.
Yes you could put the fronts in the back but I think you need to order a door speaker mount for the MKIV to get aftermarkets to fit. It soiunds much better with rears in it trust me. Might need to run some speaker cable from the headunit.

Thankfully I dont have any door buzzing but anything to detach the speaker as much as possible from the door skin would be great.

The amp in the Sony radio may not be the highest powered but at the moment I do not think I am pushing it too hard at all. Crossover wise, do you mean the passive EQ idea? If I stuck a passive EQ in it would be across the master out of the radio just so I can tweak the overall sound though I may have misunderstood that part of the post.

Ill run some speaker cable to the back and with any luck, well I say luck, the carpets will need to come up a bit more so I can but a bit more sound deadening into the wagon.

The particular speakers I have were bought so they could fit in the MKiv doors. We had one pair and the windows would not roll down :p
The older ones were ripspeed. Not too bad actually. Tight low end. I think it was a kevlar woofer or at least an imitation.

Thanks for the advice, Ill take a look at the Kenwood range.

What do you think about not going coaxial for the new speakers?
I am in two minds about it though if I am right, and its just resonance which is causing the problems, decoupling the speaker from the door skin could help a lot. Also, it could just be a horrible speaker :p
