Yesterday the engine in my car died while I was out driving. These was no warning, no banging noise either when it stopped. It just died very quietly and I had to pull over to the side of the road. I have a gut feeling it's probably that the timing belt has snapped. Does anybody know whether the engine in these cars have an interference or non-interference design? If it's not the latter it'll probably cost me an arm and a leg to get fixed and probably better off getting rid... :(

Is it the 16valve engine or 8 valve? On the 16 valve engine the cams can break.

Only the 16v was ever in the leon. They are an interferance engine so there will be damage if it has broken.

Was it overdue a change that you recon its the belt? The upper timing belt cover is only held in place by 2 metal clips so just pop them off and have a look.
