New Political Dynasties in Ireland

With the recent election and the decimation of Fianna Fail, many of the old political dynasties have been virtually wiped out too.

For the first time in 55 years, there is no Haughey in the Dail. The Lenihan/O'Rourke clan have been dealt with a series of near fatal blows - only Brian Jr. has kept his seat whilst Connor and Mary have met with political oblivion.

Of course, I don't think political dynasties are a great thing, it's better to have politicans that run for the Dail based on their own convictions but the reality is that dynasties still continue. There are as many of them in FG as there were in FF - Simon Coveney, the new Minister for Agriculture, succeeded his late father Hugh. Barry Cowen, one of the very few FF successes, is the brother of BIFFO.

So do you think any new political dynasties will emerge?

How about a Ming Dynasty? The last one lasted from 1368 to 1644 in China. Will a new one lord over Roscommon-South Leitrim for 276 years?

But seriously, will the old reliable dyansties keep going or do you see new ones emerging?

You just wrote this so you could say Ming Dynasty didn`t you?!!

Hopefully the days of dynasty is gone but its quite likely that people follow in their parents foot steps, its kind of natual its just what they know.

Believe it or not it only popped into my head after I started the thread. (which was over on AH but got sent here).

The political family/dynasty is such a powerful thing in Ireland and I don't think this is a really good thing. Look at Pee Flynn and Beverly. Look at Mary Hanafin and her father - the apple doesn't fall far from the tree IMO...
