Why is this acceptable on public transport?

There are certain rules we all generally follow on public transport: don't have your music blaring so that the sound leaks from your headphones, don't speak loudly into your mobile etc. etc.

So why do people think it's completely acceptable to watch films on their laptops or whatever without headphones in? It is so irritating to be on a train and to hear the film but not see it, it's even worse when two people in the carriage are watching films separately so that the sounds from each film intermingles and forms a cacophony. People usually listen to them without headphones to placate their kids, so whilst their kids are occupied, everyone else has to be disturbed. Grrrr! [/rant]

EDIT: I should say that I only really notice this on longish train journeys rather than commuter transport.

Tell them how the movie ends. Job done.

If the film is any way good I must say I don't mind a bit, I'd rather have the sound to go with it.

But if its some shite American "sitcom" with a laugh track and some cocky ould prick of a bastard telling unfunny jokes then the conductor should come along, open the window of the train and kick the fecker's laptop or more likely iPad out from his hands onto the track

Because people are inconsiderate, ignorant and to be avoided at all costs.

to be fair - are we expected to sit in silence? afraid to cough or even fart in case we're heard? lol. i've never watched a movie on public transport but ive played the odd electronic game. not realising it made noise as i cant hear - so after one instance of dirty evils (glares) i learned to ask someone about the noise things make before i take it out. didnt wanna be lynched!

i can see how fecking annoying it'd be to hear 'boom boom beep boom THUD' but movies seem a bit different

They're Dublin bus bye-laws I imagine, but never enforced.

I told this "individual/college student of African descent" to turn his music down, on a bus in the city centre at 9am on a packed bus.
    Fooker started throwing punches.
    He's been charged with assault.
He'll probably get sent on a holiday or something as punishment

A lot of these pig ignorant pricks are angry individuals just hoping someone will give them an excuse to lash out.

All you can do is buy decent earphones yourself (I recommend "Koss" "The Plug" ones), for sound insulation and quality.

If they're just kids, then there's an android application for smart phones called "Dog Whistler Lite" which is a high pitched sound generator.
I can hear to about 14.30khz, but young kids can hear higher pitches.
So you could do their heads in bigtime by playing a really high pitched annoying sound that only they can hear.

just a thought though - if someone is watching a slasher movie or some other 15/18 rated movie before the watershed on public transport thats a bit much! besides - no one wants to hear someone being murdered on the other end of the dart. and if its kids dvd's no one wants to hear balamory or barney screaming i love you, you love me - at 8am in the morning.

I probably should clarify in my OP that it tends to be on longer train journeys.

You'd be surprised what some old farts can hear. You think you're just annoying the kids but also a few old farts like meself and a good few others.

What ya need is a portable EMP device. Put them back to 1955 as far as technology is concerned, then you`ll really have them in a panic

Don't blame you. They're little pricks really.

I've 2 of 'em myself & wonder why sometimes.

Still, It's nice for me to know (& lots of other people apparently) to know that perhaps, there's someone who just might look after me in my old age....

    Where there's a will there's a relative & all that..;)

Won't someone please think of the fecking childeren!

Nevermind the fact of course that they have already seen 2girls1cup and worse in school as long as parents are able to delude themselves into thinking their little precious wouldn't be into any of that stuff at all.

I've never heard anyone watching a movie on a train before, and I get long distance ones fairly often.

What I find more annoying is people who put their bags on the seat next to them because they just can't bear to sit next to a stranger. You didn't pay for two seats, you only get one!

^^ That just reminded me, was on a flight back to Dublin from Germany last week and the hostesses were doing the headcount. They counted at least 5 times and they couldn't figure out why they were one person short, held the flight up about 5-10 minutes.

Turned out a "large" gentleman up the front was being counted once, when in fact he was sitting in two seats. Way to bring attention to the chap ladies!

Why would anyone want to watch a movie in teeny-weeny eye strain-o-vision?

I've been on Finnish trains where people decided because the carraige was half empty they would plug in the laptop and watch a movie. I just put on my MP3 player and went back to my book.

    None of us do really.

Historically, all my family run up huge mileage & I wouldn't dream of suicide, sooooo....

Luckily both my kids are girls, so at least if they stay local & I don't tell them where the money's stashed, I'll get fed properly.:D

Do these rules apply to Dublin Bus? cos they certainly aren't followed. Full of nob heads with music pumpin, or talking loudly on phones. Hate people who seem to have business meetings while standing on a packed bus at rush hour in the morning. Can they not 30 mins til they're in work, or talk quieter?
