Get in the Van

Has anyone here read 'Get in the Van' by Henry Rollins?? I think it is one of the most brutally honest books on the music scene I have ever read. It is basically Rollins' diary from his time on the road with Black Flag. Any thoughts/opinions on it? :) So as not to exclude anyone who hasn't read Get in the Van, what book/s do you recommend on punk?

Been looking for this for a while as well as ''Our band could be your life'' which is a collection of road diaries from a few punk bands

Any idea where to get them?Rollins is a hugely inspirational person i think.

Both are on Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_14?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=get+in+the+van&sprefix=get+in+the+van although Get in the Van is very expensive. Get in the Van is inspirational as it shows just how tough it is to be in a band. The constant grind of life in Black Flag is as astounding and shows how dedicated bands were to the punk ethos. Even if you are not a big fan of the band it is still worth a read.

This is great, still borrowing it off a mate. Must get it back to him.

Much more based around the American scenes. But still very good.

Chapters on Parnell street (Dublin) will order books in for customers, just ask at information.

I've been meaning to read it. I've read Solipsist by Rollins which is a collection of eh strange short stories. I wasn't too keen on it.

I've just re-read Stiff Little Fingers - Song by Song which is basically a long interview with Jake Burns talking about the history of the band and the background to a lot of their songs. Pretty interesting.

I can imagine that his stories might be a bit weird. Never read the SLF book but what a great band. Another great read is The Story of Crass by George Berger especially since there is very little written on the band.

Which is a bit too detailed sometimes at 670+ pages..

Check out 'Broken Summers' by Rollins also. It's about the recording of 'Rise Above' and the tour that followed.

A riot of our Own by Johnny Green (Clash Roadie) is a really good take on them.
