Tv is out of order at the moment and was wondering if the above is at all possible?
Has anyone ever done it before?

I've only used it from my laptop to the tv.
I don't think it works both ways but I may be wrong.

I have never seen a Laptop with a video-in port, so the likely answer is no. What make and model laptop do you have?

No, you need a capture card for that kind of carry on.
