the iPad 2 ... will apparently come with the option of data tethering to your iPhone ... which in theory sounds great, but I could really do with some clarification on a few points. Your phone now becomes a hotspot ... so does this mean your iPad 2 will be picking up a WIFI signal from it [ negating the need to buy the more expensive 3G version ] also with tethering, does anyone know can you pay for it month at a time, without being tied into a contract? ... and finally ... how much a month? all help greatly appreciated!

    peace

yeh the ipad 2 will see the iphone 4 as a wireless spot.

there are still reasons to buy the 3G ipad 2, integrated gps and compass for one.

on the cost, it's totally carrier dependent.

I think the iPad can use the iPhone's gps while connected though.

it does, but it's not real time, only requests gps every 30 seconds or so.

It's not just an iPad 2 feature. Any The WiFi iPad will log onto any WiFi signal, whether this is a wired or fixed connection.
I have Personal Hostpot functionality on my iPhone 4 and HTC Desire, the iPad 1 will use either quite happily. It can tell the iPhone is not a 'normal' wifi, so it can use GPS, etc, but it can't for the HTC. What that might mean for face time, I don't know. It's not "allowed" on 3G, presumably you can't FaceTime using an iPad 2 tethering from an iPhone 4.

I read that it might be possible to trick the iPad 2 into thinking that it is wifi and thus allow FaceTime to work.

Personally I use a HD Desire with its hotspot on and my iPad sees it as a wifi point (of course) and it works really well, so well in fact that while I own a GPS model, I havent even bothered to get the mini-SIM because of the cost.

I'll be getting an iPad2 on Monday (from the states) and will let you know anything you want to know about it then....

    DeV.
