A nice new model Scenic. Low low miles, 39,000, 2004, 1 year nct. Middle range model, sun roof, air con, e/w, alloys etc. Looks lovely and I really like them. Newer Renaults supposed to be more reliable, not that I personally have ever had issue with them? €3,995

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Toyota/Corolla-Verso/1.6-5DR-/201106201191712/advert?channel=CARS
Toyota Corolla Verso twice the mileage 92,000 - 2002, 1 year nct. Basic Model, no fogs, no alloys. Does it being a Toyota make it good value? €3,650

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Passat/PASSAT-S/201102200885404/advert?channel=CARS
VW Passat 2003, 75,000, brand new NCT. 4 owners .... should this be a warning sign? My OH has a 2000 model but higher spec, never had any problems with his and its a lovely drive this is a 1.6 petrol his is a 1.9 diesel though. €3,950

So asking your thoughts as I know TOYOTA and VW have or had a better name than RENAULT. The Toyota is probably my least favorite based on looks followed by the VW as its not a hatch but still has a massive boot so no real complaint. I like them all Renault being my favourite after having one already 1998 model, sold it last year and it still ran well.

This is top of my budget and definitely would hope I would get 5 good years out of the car. Making me wonder about the 2002 Toyota with its higher miles and older age? Though I know VW and Toyota are well capable of doing 300,000 and Renault should too. So really just wondering do you think I should be concerned for any of these.

I have 2 children both in booster and baby seats, heading to France this Summer camping so need the boot room buggies still in use and we have a dog. The Renault and VW have proved worthy for me in the past.

Everyone else will tell you corrolla or Passat (depending on which camp they live in).

3 years ago we went with a (Grand)Scenic. No problems, nor with the Scenic it replaced.

Ya thats what I think to, but come on you too are a renault fan and renault owner like myself... I would love to upgrade to the grande in a few years, the new model is divine.

I would look for a facelift Megane estate (06+) or facelift Laguna estate (05+) Both of these should be cheaper than a same year Scenic allowing you to get a newer and potentially more reliable car.

How old was your grand scenic when you bought it?

Yeah I had a good sit and play in the new Scenic while the mother wasbuying her Megane last year. Very very nice. It'll be a while before it's in price range for the next upgrade though. :(

I do like the megane estate but not as roomy as scenic and actually are about same price. Not a fan of the laguna.

We are woking off 1 now. In cars that are pre 07-08 (not sure exactly when) you can still buy a 2nd hand one and reprogram it. Might still be possible on new ones but not officially AFAIK.

New they are €200 ish I think. Fairly standard for any key nowadays.

You replaced a scenic with a grand scenic? I think your living in the Renault camp so! :D

Completely different cars . We moved from a Scenic I to a (Grand) Scenic II.

Sure even if it was the same model, how many people know someone that replaces their Mondeo or Corrolla with another once or more dureing a model cycle? The country was full of those people for years, and still is. Theres an old couple across from me that are on their 2nd or 3rd of the outgoing Micra.

Hehe guyincognito you are stealing my post here :P

Sooooo what would the rest of you be picking out of the 3 chosen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,074 ✭✭✭redsteveireland

I surprised myself here, I actually would pick the renault. Low mileage, not bad to look at, I love sunroofs, price not too bad.
I still worry about reliability when I hear renault though.
Don't particularly like the Toyota, and I hate the Passat in that colour and the engine is too small to drag that big lump around.
I have a feeling you have already picked your favourite.

Yeah I absolutely know my favourite but I if I was guarenteed I was goign to get more from another car I would go for it. I was thinking myself the 1.6 in passat might be a bit of a pull nor was I keen on the colour. The Toyotas I think look old fashioned anyhow but I know they are great cars. But I do believe the tide is changing for the Renault and this seems a great offer.

For 2 kids and a Dog, I would rule the Passat out. You should be looking at a hatch back car, easier entry to the boot for buggies and the pooch to jump into. If you are still thinking VW, maybe look at the Sharan, about the same size as both the Toyota and Renault

Out of my budget, dont really want to go into higher tax bracket either. Dog not coming to France just so ya know too.

That Passat is a horrible overpriced yoke.

Firstly its a base model with Aldi/Lidl hubcaps. Secondly its a 1.6 petrol which is a guzzler and hasnt the power of two hens farting. Thirdly its way overpriced.

I thought it was a good price and lol the hubs would of been first to go. But ys thats why I wanted in put wasnt sure if a 1.6 passat would have any power. So yes we can safely scrap the passat.

You will get a 1.9 TDI in a comfortline spec for near enough that money.

Hear what you saying, but over the course of 1 year you will save more money in fuel over road tax. 1.9tdi over 1.6 petrol per tank would be about 350 miles.

There would not be a lot of difference in the tax anyway. The 1.6 is dreadful..

hmmm I have thought that 100 euro in difference but I really need to keep costs down as much as I can so dont tempt me with any more nice big engines. Believe me I would love one but I will settle with driving my partners when I can.

Donedeal.ie, buy&sell.ie, newspapers, local trader magazine etc.......... mre importantly, be price aware before you buy. That passat is completely unsaleable at that price.

The 1.9 is not a big engine. It makes economic sence to buy the more economical car. That 1.6 Passat would cost you hundreds more at the end of the year.

Well I definitly want to buy from a dealer and not privately and I realise this makes it more expensive. But I need assurance when I spent that money.

In high and sight I realise the passat is definitly over priced for a petrol. But what about the other pics?

Ok, apart form the traveling to France in the summer, how many miles would you do weekly? In what type of traffic?
If your driving in city traffic, then a petrol makes sense, however if your doing more motorway milage, then go for a diesel.
I drive a diesel Mondeo, currently a 1.8, used to have a 2.0, I am getting around 700 miles per tank, 70 litres. My wife has a 1.6 petrol car, she gets around 500 miles on a 60 litre tank. Add that up at the end of the year and the saving is there.
