Look up state law first on scopes in particular, got tightened a lot recently.

Leupold Vs Bushnell is very little in the difference, also look at Burris.

No comparsion between bushnell and leupold .Leupold scopes are
a far better setup and the prices between the two reflect this view .For the money, bushnell scopes are good value and work well.

If the person comming over brought it in his checked luggage minus the documentation and box would he not get away with it and say he is going using it during his holidays or something!!???

Theres no problem bringing in a scope.Ive brought stuff in on returning from hunting trips and never had an issue. I even brought in a compund bow and broadheads ( purely for ornamental purposes) and both were checked in Chicago and passed on. I bought swarovski binos in America last year and kept them in my holdall and everything was grand. The only thing that can be problamatic is bringing loads of gear in bulk purchases. If you check on the green card return cards which all travellers get leaving, you can bring in goods to the value of $2500 U.S dollars. So relax about the scope. Its only when posting goods from America to here is when you get caught with tax but this can be avoided when the good are are a birthday gift!!!!:)
    P.S Leupold without a doubt

Have no experience on the import issue but would highly reccommend Leupold scopes. I had one on my stalking rifle for a long time and took no end of knocks and bangs without ever losing zero, still have it as a spare !! Not crazy money either !!

Out of the options, I'd pick Burris.
Seriously liking the look of the new Fullfield E1's......
    http://burrisoptics.com/fullfielde1.html
But if you were taken by the regular Fullfield II's, they should be gotten for a better price now as I'm sure they're being discontinued.

    John,
I take it you meant Burris and not Bushnell as the title suggests.

Burris, in my opinion is the best scope per dollar. If, however, you have someone bringing it back from the states, then you may as well throw down the few extra dollars and get the Leupold. If you resell in Eire, you'll probably do better.

Leupold is better than Burris, but not by much. In the states, I only buy Burris. But, I can buy anything at any time. Your case is different. Also, when you have multiple rifles and want to buy multiple scopes, the difference, if even only $100 adds up.

I would stay away from the LRS - just more stuff to go wrong. If you buy an LRS does the scope come with a lifetime warranty in either case? I doubt it due to the electronics.

As for customs, there is again the question of importing: (a) as in you're going to resell, (b) as in Leupold selling to you US to Eire, and (c) you were in the states, bought it, and are now returning it for personal use.

I can only tell you that I have brought in several scopes, rangefinders, and even firearms. I am legal to own both sides of the pond so my case may differ from yours.

However, if you are just bringing in some glass, even an LRS, I doubt there will be a problem. I believe the night vision stuff may be another case. I do not know, but I have never tried.

    Slan.

I have a Burris Fullfield II 6.5-20x50 and the brother has a Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x50. I personally would prefer the Burris. Cheaper too;)

The zeiss conquest scopes from the US are great.
They are ideal for lamping foxes.

Agreed, the Zeiss conquest scopes are some of the best in the business. The quality is for sure better than the Burris or Bushnell. It costs a little bit more but definitely worth the price.

If you are going to be visiting the US and bringing back a scope, check out this site for Zeiss scopes. They sell only Zeiss conquest scopes. Be sure to check out other sites though and try to find the best deal.
