Is it just me or has this show got BORING since Marian Richardson took over.

She seems to pick off-the-wall clips, that obviously appeal to her, but are hardly "a compilation of the best nuggets" of the week.

Witness the clip for the OliverCallan/Michael Flatley sketch - long fruitless wait for the point of it...why oh why pick that as a highlight? (He does good impressions but does anyone else think that guy needs a decent scriptwriter?)(another thread?)

Then again, Ruth Buchanan used OC clips frequently and chuckled merrily afterwards, so I guess it's just me. Sigh...

I miss Ruth. Her perky, smiley demeanour was infectious. You just knew it was Saturday, with the whole weekend in front of you. :(

I happens with alot of shows, people make their own and when they leave its just not the same.

I would agree I miss Ruth, I wonder was the choice of Marion Richardson the right one??

Now who could they have chosen, Philip Boucher Hayes name comes to mind but I'm sure he would not like to be restricted.

Why not try out various people over time and then make a choice.

It dose not even have to an RTE staff member.

I'll put up with her but I'm not enjoying it maybe a more creative producer should be considered.

I used to enjoy this show. I can't really comment on the more recent choice of clips, because I just completely zone out now when it's on, so dull.

It's down to the presentation. Marian Richardson's likeable enough, but she seems to come from the Emma McNamara school of broadcasting......the robotic monotone delivery that sounds like it's coming from some kind of computerised voice system.

I'm sure she's a very competent producer, but she's just not suited to broadcasting. (either is Emma)

It's her bass voice that makes me tune out.
I feel like she is drawning from my lungs when she speaks.

'Playback' is less of a best-of show, more of a promotions push for the shows that need listeners eg. Green Tea, Ryan Tubridy's show.

I think Gerald Keane's Freudian slip on the Marian Finucane's radio programme at 11.25 a.m. when Gerald referred to Mary Harney's blow dry as a "blow job on Mary Harney -- a blow dry on her hair" (or some similar phrase) should be repeated on next Saturday's Playback.

Saw criticism of Marian Richardson on Boards.ie. Give me Marian any Saturday morning for a more professional presentation, more erudite editing -- and a welcome change from her predecessor who too often used the programme to replay her husband's Oireachtas contributions and, on occasion and even worse, inflicting her off-the-wall attempts to sing to the nation.

Some of the most cringeworthy, nay, vomit inducing moments on radio were when Ruth had control of the Playback 'button' and decided to warble her way through a segment :o. Godawful doesn't begin.....

And too right there regarding her often shameless promotion of the hubbie's political ambition, particularly when he used address a probably empty Seanad knowing full well that his real audience would be found on the national airwaves thanks to the inside track often afforded him by compliant Montrose mandarins.

As for the present "Playback", tbh I get enough of RTE during the weekdays and would rarely listen for highlights, from what I hear during the week they must be as rare as rocking-horse shlte anyway.

Today's programme sounds like its being presented by Harm Luikjx (The Met Éireann forecaster from The Netherlands).

He's grand but he does remind me a bit of a fourth class pupil reading aloud to the classroom.

It wasn't him. It's the other lad (excuse the spelling) Speichac Spalinski who does the radio commentary on the Eurovision with Shay Byrne. He has also been a producer on some other programmes.
I can't do a proper search on him cos I can't pronounce/spell his name properly.
He can be very funny at times.

Zbyszek Zalinski. Spent too long going out with Eastern Europeans to not pick up some ability to spell their/their countrymens names :p

I think you have cut to the crux of this . Her favourite programme seems to be the Boring John Murray show , which is anything but funny and definitly boring

Marian Richardson’s final show tomorrow morning.

Ah no way - who is taking over from her? Sure it only seems like yesterday since Ruth left it

I like Marian, and I liked Ruth Buchanon too.

I'm not so keen on the temporary host who sometimes filled-in when Marian was away.

Hope she doesn't get the gig, no disrespect to her personally.

Would quite like to hear John Bowman do it.

I think the regular fill in is Fiona Kelly - who also does What It Says In The Papers a fair bit.

Anytime I hear it I imagine her sitting there in pink dungarees - hard to remove that image from my mind as a kid growing up watching BOSCO repeats.

Brendan O'Connor would be a very different type of presenter. He seems to be first choice fill in for the other Marian on the weekends but it seems to be a full time position and I guess hee would be busy with his Sunday Indo duties.

I would like to see Niall O Sheridain (sp) get it. He is the one continuity announcer who is entertaining on that repeat "Best of the Days Radio" hour from 2am to 3am.

But never rule out Miriam. After all she genuinely has a free slot on Saturdays.

Caroline Murphy. That's who I was thinking of.

As an RTE staffer, the only show she was working on for the past 9 years was Playback:

Can't believe she's been working on it 9 years since Ruth retired, where have those 9byears gone.
I do like Fiona Kelly doing the papers, better than some of the others that stand in for John S Doyle (he's the best at the papers)

Ronan Kelly to replace Marian, starting next week.

Just caught a tiny snatch of her signoff.

She mentioned her predecessors on Playback - Ruth Buchanan, Treasa Davison, but I didn't catch the other names.

Anyone have a full list of the regular presenters?

Sinead Mooney will also be presenting Playback every so often, but it’s Ronan for the next few weeks.

I feel sorry for the presenter of this show, having to listen to a whole week of RTE Radio’s output.

Petula Martin - have you heard herself and Shay Byrne when she does the business news on Rising Time?.
Hyperactive at that hour of the morning is not the word to describe them both...
