I was told earlier this week that not only would i not recieve any of my grant but none of my fee's refunded because i did not attend this semester.

The only reason i did not attend is because i could actualy not afford to attend because i was waitin so long on the grant

I really needed my fees back because i got a loan off a friend i dont care about the money from the grant.

Should i go to my local VEC and ask them to refund the fees? or try talk to my college?

any help would be great :)

Did you tell your college that you were withdrawing or did you just stop showing up? Tbh they usually have very strict rules about refunds and the sort of notice you have to give and if you weren't aware of the regulations/didn't follow them then they're within their rights to not agree to refund you.

Given your circumstances you should approach the Fees office and/or your course director or tutor underlining your financial circumstances and hope they'll be lenient.

i just stopped showing up, i was waiting so long i couldn't afford to go.

I did not know any of this before i stopped going. im a first year student.
and it is my fault for not turning up but they did not tell me it would affect my fee's being refunded. All i was told that if i did'nt pay my fee's i would lose my place ( which was not true ). and that i would get them back.

I know, most students don't realise about rules like those until it's too late. That's why they really encourage people to talk to them as soon as there is an issue. I'm sure it varies by college but in my own the refunds are on a sliding scale i.e. the earlier you pull out the more of a refund you get, and once you've gone beyond a certain amount of months there is no refund if you do end up leaving.

Like I said, your best bet is to go to them and explain the predicament you're in. They may be quite lenient with you, it's really their decision. Good luck with it.

    Hi there,

I recommend you go to speak to the chairperson of your course. Then I would suggest contacting someone who deals with student affairs such as students' union or a student advice centre rep if there is one. Get a letter from anyone you speak to in relation to the matter and have them write

"Mary has come to speak with me in relation to the matter. I would like to comment that she has despite her attendance kept up with required assignments and work from home and we are satisfied with her progress and recommend that she continue participation in the course..."

Something to that effect should work. Photocopy the letters twice. Send the originals to the grant committee. IF this does not work I suggest you then contact a TD in relation to the case. Any news articles that sway toward the unfair grant system and tardiness of payments etc should also go in your favour.

    Hope this helps.

    InTouch.

if you were registered for semister say one and two you should have got grant payments one and two. the college should have invoiced the council or vec for your fees and then had the funds to refund you.

what i would do is check if the college did get paid your fees. if they have then they have to refund you. if they have not been paid then send copy of the invoice you paid to the council/vec with your award letter and ask for a refund and also payment of your appropriate instalments.

down side is that if you are paid the aboe you wont be granted aid that portion of whatever again again.
