A question about race weight?

    Hi guys,
    just a quick newbie question about reading race cards;

Does the weight quoted on Racingpost account for jockey allowances or should i factor those in when working out the actual starting race weight?

Just to give an example from the 2.55 today at Fakenham:

    http://www.racingpost.com/horses2/cards/card.sd?race_id=525079&r_date=2011-03-18

If I'm reading this correctly, Erzan is down to run at 11-0 but the jockey (Harry Challoner) has an allowance of 7lbs.

So is Erzan running at 11-0 or 7lbs lighter at 10-7???

Its probably a very silly question but i'm new to all this so apologies in advance.....

Subtract the apprentice claim from the allotted weight. Erzen carried 10-7.

    I didn't read that properly.

    What Morgans said.

Regards weights, look for out for a figure like (6ex) beside a horses names also.

It means they won a race in the preceding 6 days, and is due put up 6lb, but the trainer has ran him very quickly again to avail of the current lower handicap mark before he can be penalised.

A lot of people like backing horses that are availing of this lower mark, but depending on the circumstances, I don't like horses running too close together as I think they tire.

Not an opinion held at all in Australia I learned over there, they flog them, and even do so for the Melbourne cup. Some qualifiers, like the Geelong cup, are held very close to the day.

Sir Mark Prescott ran a horse once to rock up 7 wins on the bounce in quick succession, Masafi, or something like that.

    S

2-3 weeks is a typical back up for a race in oz..
Something like the McKinnon or the Saab quality is held 3 days before the Cup, however the horses are capable to back up..

No, they show the actual weight carried by the horse AFAIK
