Mens-Mags. Why so few and for the ladies loads?

Was in a place yesterday and had time to kill so I though I would buy a mens magazine.
Popped into a garage (one of a well known chain) and I noted that there was only three mags for men.
Then I noted (once again for the many, many time) that there was 30+ of female mags.
Honest question: Why so few for the blokes and for the ladies loads generally (and not just in relation to this chain of garage shops)?

I suspect there is only so much make-up (Pollyfiller sometimes) that can be talked about, dresses and clothes as well as other tips and stories that anyone person can take - so why the vast huge difference?

I wasn't looking for some lads style mag with the latest bird flashing her latest plastic filled accessories or trying to pick-up the latest Penthouse for the political articles. I was looking for something to genuinely hold my interest that would address mens other issues.
Needless to day, there was much less choice.

So why so few (in comparison) - and if there is any decent ones out there, what would you recommend?

have you read cosmopolitan? it has more porn and sex tips then any male mag! ;)

Every bloke I know loves havin a read of the girls magazines. Sex tips, insight into the way us crazy women work... They're as interesting to most men as to most girls (or maybe I just know thwe wrong men :p ).

Mens mags tend to be either porn or geared towards a specific interest. Womens are sterotypically the celebs mags etc, that to be honest bore the hell out of me but I know many men who use em as a guilty pleasure (while holding em behind the pages of Nuts to look like a real bloke!).

As a man myself I have 4 main interests that I would like to see in a magazine, hopefully some editor is out there now reading this post and working on this magazine as we speak, my 4 main interests are arm wrestling, knitting, speaking to people on public transport and whistling. And I would like the magazine to be called "You can't spell menstruation without men!", wish me luck!

There are car mags, boat, mags, fishing mags, computer mags and loads of others too of all different interests geared mostly at men so i'd say that should answer your question OP. Also, I don't think men are as concerned with their looks and bodily functions as women!!

You think some publishing house might try bring out a mag that ok, would have some nice ladies in it occasionally - but would also have a decent bit of sport, cars, DIY, music, computering, news, analysis, interesting articles be it from exploration, historical or other perspectives etc but so far all I have found are ones that have a tiny bit of some of those items and the majority of it based around what clothing gear we can be flogged or convinced we need to be seen in!

Because we have so many magazines that we need to split them into genres.

Wimmin are vaccous twats who like to read things that lower the IQ. Companies know this and make magazines to cater for their appalling taste and acquired stupidity and mass produce hundreds of 'celebrity' orientated guff-o-rama.

It is an affront to see purportedly educated women read that crud. A waste of a university space.

    Mod: Poster banned.

shops stock what sells best. small shops stock mostly womens mags cos women are much bigger mag buyers. but if you pop into eason or another big book/mag shop youll see loads for men. they tend to be relating to porn or hobbies though. not many men give a sh*te what cheryl cole has been up to or katie price's latest drama. - like ok. though ive known men that like to read that and now!
i dont know if theres a mens version of say: stellar or prudence. that focus on articles more than the lack of articles on a lady or on fly fishing or car parts

Cos there arent enough made up stories about men with abusive wives haunting them from beyond the grave to fill that many mags. The high end glossy womens mags like Cosmo and that, the respected ones are alright, its the ones like Womans Way or Chat or Yelp or some other random word and sh1te like that with front headlines like "I found out my husband stole my uterus and sold it on ebay!!" are ridiculous.

Yea but in reality, each one is a specialist magazine - that can be picked up by either sex. We have female mechanics, sailors, PC techies, etc... ok, fewer in number but they are there for both sexes as such.

I've yet to see a good/any combination of the previous areas mentioned, combined within one actual magazine.

I dunno, I read somewhere recently mens sales of care products has rocketed - but again thats just one area alone for a magazine topic.
From browsing the usual variety of few mags that try to be interesting and informative, so far all I can see is either specialist stuff and/or fashion gear.

What about boring farts like me what wold like to pick up a magazine that tries combine a good lot of mens topics within one cover - without having to have a pair of tits stuck into my face.
(I'm NOT objecting to looking at them - just once in a while I need a break from them! I'm possibly sad.. I know :D )

true those ones seem a bit mad - but maybe some women read them in the same way they read books. just something to read.
i cant stand the high end fashion mags or the like of cosmo. i dont need to see all those flippin ads. but i stick to middle ground like stellar and pru. at least the ads are things you can afford. not 800 euro watches. lol. :pac:

It depends what defines a mens mag?

I've rarely bought a "lads mag" the title seems to be a sure fire sign it's going to be full of shyte.

Any magazine I've bought outside of them has been a hobbiest mag because they have some information to pass on. I have no interest in reading about the latest Lynx, how to become a metrosexual, seeing some new woman in the same pose as last weeks woman with poor airbrushing, or reading about some useless geeks attempt to hang out with "cool" people.

Same here. Its just a pity that a person/bloke has to then be forced to select a specialist, on main topic mag rather than a combination of the aforementioned areas (sport, cars, DIY, music, computering, news, analysis, interesting articles be it from exploration, historical or other perspectives etc).

Men can use computers, women can't. There's nothing I could find in a magazine which costs €4+ probably that I couldn't find online.

What type of mens topics are you looking for in a generic magazine that isn't the brainless 'wahey' type stuff? From what I know of them, womens magazines are full of celeb crap or 'Haunted house' or 'abused and scarred' type things. If there are male equivalents I doubt they would be big sellers.

Buy a science or tech mag, or else the Irish Times.

Was this really necessary? Companies don't 'know' anything of the sort - they might believe it and deal in stereotyping but that hardly makes it true.

What they do is try to appeal to as many people as possible, which incorporates a lot of men too - and I know a whole bunch of lads who also read those shíte mags.

Also, while I might think they are shíte personally, it's not for me to determine what other people read. If someone does find it interesting what celeb x, y, or z did in the last week, who am I to judge.

To address your point Biggins, I think this is why most Lads mags include boobs. Its somebody trying to sell something and thinking - well, men like naked women so we'll shove a few of them in and hope we sell more. The guys that like the articles will buy it for that, the guys who like the boobs and couldn't give a monkeys about the articles will buy it too. It's all about sales.

For the record - you're not missing much. Most of the 'womens' magazines recycle the same old tired crap - they recycle within a magazine and across magazines. For the most part, it's same crap, different month, issue, year or magazine. They're marketed to appeal to teenagers moreso than adults too imho.

So, you may have less apparent choice but really, it levels out. 10 mags saying the same thing isn't really choice of reading material, it's choice of cover/brand/some other random criteria.
