Considering buying a netbook and I noticed that most if not all in my price range use this type of processor. Is it any good? I'm not a computer expert so I'm not entirely sure what to be looking for.
All I want it for is internet, some music writing programs, word processing. nothing heavy duty. I have heard the 'atom' has trouble playing videos on youtube and the likes, is this true?

The Atom processors have very low performance. Its okay for basic tasks, certainly word processing and web-browsing shouldn't be an issue.

You'll have trouble playing flash videos (youtube etc) at higher resolutions. They'll stutter and lag. If this is a major issue then you'd be better off looking at an Atom+Ion netbook - this is an Atom netbook with a Nvidia Ion graphics chip. The Ion has video acceleration so flash videos play fine (and indeed any H264 videos you have downloaded or ripped).

Im starting to see a lot of dual-core Atom N550 netbooks coming down in price so if you want something a bit nippier that'd also be something to have a look at.

The Atom processor is designed for increased battery life at the expense of performance, especially when it comes to netbooks.

You need to find out what the requirements are for the music writing programs - personally, I am not so sure that netbooks would have the performance for this type of software.

Plus, would the screen be big enough for such programs?

my advice would be to go for a better processor and a slightly larger screen. 10 inch screens and the usually crappy keyboards that come with them get very annoying to use after a while. an 11.6 or 12 inch screen is a much better bet as it will come with a decent keyboard too. the portability and weight factor is pretty much as good as a 10 inch netbook but with the other advantages. also has hdmi which is great for watching movies on flatscreens

look at the 2 thinkpad edges on this search page. you need access to an english bank a/c to get the cashback on the £270 (comes with external dvd drive) deal but even at 299 sterling it's a very good laptop with a stronger processor and graphics than a netbook. Lenovo is a good brand and this site will deliver to ireland in 2 days for £10. battery life is about 5 hours - not as good as some netbooks but the other advantages outweigh that imo
