Upgrading Bike Parts

    Hi,

I'm buying a new 2010 road bike (on wiggle), and would like to upgrade the groupset/wheels (will buy these in Ireland)

I was wondering, has anyone ever come across a case where you could trade your 'old' groupset in for a new one in a case like this? Eg the bike will come with 105s. If I was to say upgrade to ultegra for 900, is it unheard of that the shop could take the 105s for a price? Or is it a case of tough luck, sell the unused 105s on adverts/ebay?

    Thanks

What bike is it? Can you not buy an Ultegra version?

I don't know of any shop that would do that tbh. It will be unused, but it will be essentially an OEM (whatever the cycling equivalent is) groupset. Unused, but still second hand.

Are you sure this is the most cost effective option? Maybe you should look at another bike?

Giant TCR advanced. Can buy it Ultegra, but the price is a lot higher. I'm able to get relatively good deals on groupsets here, so that was my reason. I knew it was a long shot, but just wanted to throw it out there anyway! Thanks

What's the general consensus on having a mix of Sram/Shimano groupset parts on a bike? Yay or Nay? Is it breaking some sort of rule?

My current crankset and chain is SRAM while the full rear setup and front d are shimmy. Nothing wrong at all. More of a purist I'd even say. Do you have to wear a levi's shirt with levi's jeans? No.

It's more like wearing a kimono with a cowboy hat to be fair.

Me? I prefer a tailored Armani suit, full carbon, with titanium cufflinks and eau de greasuer.

You might consider putting the 105 groupset up on cycling adverts for 80% of the new price...

    I like your style :)

To the OP. If it was a 105 set then I'd be interested so let me know a price.

Is there ever any much demand for stuff like that (Mavic Askium race wheels / 105) on sites such as adverts/buy and sell? Do you get decent prices for your goods?

Good to see there's still a few Campag men around.

I got laughed at the other day in a bike shop for asking about campag.....

"oh your one of those guys are you?" he said
    "not really" I said
"but I like quality is all"....
    he said nothing.

I wonder if when Maggie Thatcher said 'we live in a classless society' she was talking about people's appreciation of bicycle components:rolleyes:

You will get a percentage, say 75%, of the lowest online price out there. The wheels will probably be an easier sale as they are straightforward- with a groupset the purchaser will want new cables and wont be able to specify things like crank length, compact/standard, derailleur length, clamp size etc. So bigger discount on the groupset.

Price (and performance) difference between 105 and Ultegra is not so great though so to me what you propose doesnt make a whole lot of sense. If you add 900 to your bike budget you should get more upgrades than the group.
