You need to create a folder system identical to that on the Playstation 3 before itll recognise it . All the folder names must be in capital letters. In the root directory of your drive, create folders named "PICTURE", "MUSIC", and "VIDEO". If you do not create these folders, your media files will not display when selecting the USB drive on your PS3. Also create a folder called "PS3" with subfolders called "EXPORT", "SAVEDATA", and "THEME" inside it.

you need to create a folder called PS3 and then put each of the other folders inside that

still nothing, now the ps3 at least thinks for a while (clock in top right corner moves when i plug it in ) but still nothing

So the drive just plain doesn't show up in the XMB?

You're sure that it's FAT32 formatted and not something like exfat?
What did you use to format it?...

Does it work on other devices like a PC or Laptop?

If its got a split USB cable you might be using the wrong connector.
Possible issue with that USB connector on your ps3?

it was formated on a mac, and in properties it says it is fat 32

the same usb charges my controler so it should be ok.

and yes it works with laptops, even my sony tv recognizes it...

ordered a powered usb hub as some forums suggested that it is not getting enough power from the ps3s usb port....

Any update on this Izy? Was going to get the WD My Passport 1tb myself to use for watching media on the PS3.
Might go for a different one now if I will need to get a USB hub.

I have a 1TB Western Digital Passport External HDD myself, I might be able to help. What type of PS3's do you lads have, is it a Phat or a Slim?

Your going to have to configure the soft & firmware before the PS3 recognises it but it will work on the PS3, I've over 700 movies & TV series on mine.

    My 320gb works fine already.

Just not sure if the ps3 will power the 1tb drive, especially since I've an older version.

Seen here someone got it working with the 80gb version but that mightn't be the usb 3.0/usb 2.0 version as it was Feb' 2010.

It should be grand then. The WD Passports only seemed to have trouble for me with my Slim, on the Phat one it was grand. The thing that is necessary is power, as the Slim uses a mere fraction of the power of which the Phat uses it doesn't generate enough power to keep up the WD Passport requirements conventionally (although I do know a very handy way around this if someone owns a Slim). So there'll be no problems for you then.

Although as regards anyone that owns a Slim and wants to use a Western Digital Passport on it I will let people know of the way around it if necessary.

Can you tell me the way around it for the slim one if it's not too long?!

Was half thinking of trading in the old ps3 for a new one at some stage and my mate is getting one of these WD's too. Not sure which ps3 he has.

Works on both PS3's fat & slim.

When I first came upon the method on how to get the HDD to work with the Slim I thought it was total bull****, it just seemed so simple and unlikely, but I was shock to find it works.

If you plug it in normally you will find that it will generate power for the disc to spin a little bit, but not enough for it to fully work. The Slim will not recognise it and the LED on the HDD will not flash — which shows it definitely isn't working up to scratch.

Now this is the weird bit. Plug the hard drive's cable into the PS3 first WITHOUT the hard drive plugged in on the other end, this is key. Then you start to plug the cable into the hard drive, but it must be very slowly, and kind of shimmy it in — but do NOT plug it in the entire way, so it doesn't click into place. Once you get the cable in so far without it in fully you should feel the drive start up and the LED start flashing, this means it's working, then you push the cable the whole way in to the HDD, and hey presto! It works! Bear in mind, this may take a few attempts to perfect as the socket on the HDD is quite small. But once you get it you'll know how it's done.

I know that method sounds like bollocks, I was adamant it was too, but alas it wasn't and I proceded to shout "No ****ing way!" on my first successful attempt. If my instructions weren't clear enough, which they mightn't be as it appears to be hard to explain I'll be more than happy to make a short video and post it, it'll be no trouble.

Ha ha it does sound crazy. It must give it a power kick that way.

God knows how you found out that method

Going to order two of these drives now, are they all good otherwise?

Do you have to do that method each time you power up the ps3 slim?

I plan on formatting it straight away to get rid of the smartware crap.

Thanks for the tips by the way, much appreciated.

I would like to know how I came across it myself! I've had no other problems with them otherwise, although I must say you do have to do that everytime you want to plug it in.

Best of luck with it anyway man.

I bought a 500gb WD passport drive recently and it didnt work on my slim ps3, but works fine on my phat model. As other people have said be careful if you have a slim. Gonna try that crazy method to see if it works :D

    ???

mine is still not working, got the phat ps3, ended up gettin some sort of ps3 server and run it from the laptop...

the powered usb hub did not help me at all

I got mine for 70 from curry's. Check it out online, someone said it was only 65 in store. See bargain alerts.

I got mine recently and have used it on the fat ps3. Just format it straight away to fat 32. Use gparted (bootable CD) or mini tool partition wizard. Delete the drive and make one big fat 32 primary partition.

Nailz - haven't got to use it on slim ps3 yet...
