VW Golf 1.2 TSI and Castrol 5W-30 oil

(Excuse the question below but don't know much about cars :))

Recently bought a new VW Golf 1.2 TSI and the dealer said I should use Castrol 5W-30 oil.

If I go to a local independent mechanic would they use this brand of oil for an oil change? Or does it make much difference if they use a different brand?

The brand of oil isn't important. Once the oil meets the VW specifications for the engine then it will be fine. If you are every having it serviced by an independant garage though be sure to check what oil they are using as there are plenty out there who will put 10w40 into everything!

There are also two types of 5w30 oil that can be used in the tsi engine, depending on your service intervals(longlife or fixed interval).

Check your manual there should be a spec number for the oil like 501 502 etc if the oil your independent uses has that spec number on the barrel or bottle then fire away if it doesn't then walk away (don't let him brush you off and tell you 'sure it'll be grand' or 'i use this for all my customers BMWs ,mercs and everything' demand to see the spec.)

Modern engines petrol engines in particular are very fussy about what type of oil the use,if you were caught short and needed a litre of oil to get you to the next service i would have no bother chucking in a non spec type of oil but when you want that oil to do its job for the entire distance between services and not harm your engine then stick with what VW recommend.

You could also simply buy your own castrol edge and bring it to your independent to use.

I'm not too particularly worried about the brand either, but often wondered how many independent garages actually use the correct grade oil (hence why I usually change it myself). My ford also takes the 5w30 oil.

A lot of the main dealers are giving good deals on servicing at the moment though. I know someone that got an annual service on a one year old Fiesta for €130 at a Ford dealer.

Well in my game I've met many mechanics and its worrying how many think that 5w30 or 10w40 will do any engine in existance and would never look up specs before changing oil.

We always have 4 x 200L barrels(5w30 fully synthetic, 10w40 semi, 5w40 and 5w30 low ash) as well as another 3 or 4 20L drums of manufacturer specific oils in the workshop and even at that we still ocassionally have to go out and get a certain oil spec specially for a car.

And as for the fiesta, well if it had average kms for a 1 year old car then your friend payed €130 for an oil change!

And an oil filter, and at least you know it's the correct one as is the oil. I'm sure they'd give the air filter a blow as well, and a general check over the car and swap the wheels. Still cheaper than some independents are charging. You also get the book stamped from a Ford dealer. :)
