Knock-on effects of Japanese earthquake

I'm just wondering what effects, if any, will the disaster in Japan (God bless them) have on the price of Shimano bike components. Whereabouts are they made? I believe in Japan itself.

I wonder has production slowed down as a result. I can imagine it's likely there are workers who have left the place to seek out family. It will be interesting to see if prices increase over the next few weeks and months.

Shimano prices were rising a lot before the quake regardless. Was warned by an owner of a LBS about this - groupsets in particular were going up a lot in price.
I think a large amount of Shimano bike component manufacturing is carried out in Malaysia in the town of Pekan Nanas.

Beautiful. Thousands dead, a potential nuclear meltdown and many towns wiped off the face of the earth. Irish cyclists main concern is the price of shimano components.

Its a valid question and if you find it in bad taste simply don't post.

Look at what's happened to the markets as a result of it, down ~15% in Japan. Commodities and oil prices have dropped a lot too. If anything this should have an effect of making the components cheaper as inputs will now cost will have dropped
