Problem with damp, engine refusing to start

I have a problem with my 1996 VW Polo where it refuses to start from what I can only deduce is from damp getting into the HT leads. Result is the engine refuses to start and will only start after cranking it for a bit and then leaving it be and then coming back to it. Once you get it going it will start on the key all day.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? Someone told me to throw an old coat over the engine at night.

Condensation can be a bane, try WD40 inside the distributor cap and over the leads.

It's not an old Sierra :pac:
Are the plugs, leads, coils etc due a change perhaps?
Could also be a fouled fuel filter that is crudey so takes a while to prime properly.
